Hey Spunko, I don't think that the phone's speakerphone is the cause of the reduction of quality in ringtones. If it were, then .mp3s would sound very crappy when being played on the phone, which it doesn't. It's the process of emailing the ringtone to yourself that causes this reduction in quality. When the phone recieves the message, the file is converted into a .qcp file, and makes it sound crappy. I'm not really sure, just specualting, but it's probably the case. Since there's no other way of getting ringtones without buying the overpriced kit, I guess it's fine.

Sorry if these questions have already been asked but I didn't have time to check through all 7 prior pages.
1) Can I place MP3's on my Mini-SD card and then use those songs as ringtones?
2) If that is not possible and I have to use the e-mailing method, do the songs have to be in MP3 format?
3) When using the Mini-SD card, I currently have it formatted with my Motorola phone. Should I erase everything, insert it into my Chocolate for formatting, and then place MP3 songs on it?
Thanks so much for the help! A very helpful forum!

Thanks! I remember the good ole days when Verizon was too stupid to realize that one could use MP3's on the TransFlash card as ringtones. Sigh...

Someone should just rename this forum post "The Chocolate FAQ", since we're going all over the place outside of ringtones now. Anyways:
Powair7s: As far as anyone can tell, no, you can't transfer ringtones through your microSD card, because the phone does not create a directory for it on the card. You CAN transfer music, but that's because there is a directory for that. Unless someone figures out how to deal with the created directories on the microSD card, then you're out of luck trying that method.
jdtran627: Although .qcp is supported by LG, they only use that format when creating "My Sounds". Any .mp3's, .wav's, .midi's, etc. will play as it is sent. LG (or Verizon, for that matter) will not make any conversions when receiving MMS's. I've checked.
Eyesonme: Yes, there are many programs that convert movie files into the 3GP format (the format that phones use to record movies). All you have to do is Google 3GP Converter (something along those lines), and you can be directed to any number of sites that host the conversion programs, many of which are free. After conversion, you can use a MicroSD card reader, add it to your library on WMP and sync via USB (I still have yet to verify this method), or plain email it, as long as its under 350k.

This forum is great so I hopped on the bandwagon and joined. I just bought
a new VX8500 because I heard you could create your own mp3's and use them as ringtones.....sweet
Spunk ....huge kudos for your sharing your time and knowledge base with us and everyone else chiming in. A very informative 7 pages!!!
I'm going to get the USB cable and try bitpim to upload to the choco.
Spunk
I plan to use Pro Tools to edit a 15-30 sec? spot. Save as an AIFF 16bit/44.1 stereo file, then use iTunes to convert the AIFF to an MP3/96k, (keep mps file under (350k) then use BitPim via USB cable to drop into the ringtone directory. Sound like a good plan to you?
I'll post the results in a few days.

Wow, Pro Tools huh? You must be pretty good with sound production, so I'm sure you know what you're doing. Just to let you know though, the 350k file limit is only if you're emailing the file to yourself, so it wouldn't really be a problem converting it to a higher bitrate if you're using the USB.
