i just bought a razr v3i and while it works mostly there are two problems:
1)every time i checks her voicemail it sends a text msg back with a couple of symbols
2)while it will text msg ok it will not send any media(pictures)
it is a cingular account and they say its software and motorola says they cant fix it.
its an unlocked phone not purchased through them and they just wont help at all
is ther a fix?
thanks

Boy, there oughta be a sticky about this subject, or maybe there is and I haven't seen it.
Your phone isn't broke and there's nothing for Motorola to fix, it's working as it should for an unlocked phone.
Basically, Cingular won't help you with the phone. The phone didn't come from them, so it doesn't have the Cingular Flex, which is Cingular's add-on software to the phone. That already has the settings for Cingular's MediaNet and their data service.
The little message that comes after you check your voicemail is a little code to tell the phone something, probably turning off the voicemail notification symbol. This can't be changed unless you can find someone around here that can load the Cingular Flex into your phone.
I believe the settings you need to send multimedia messages can be found in a sticky at the top of the Cingular forum. I have the Dolce & Gabbana V3i and I've found that I really don't miss this stuff. But I'm an old fart that just wants a mobile phone that works well. This phone fits the bill nicely.
you'll need to manually input the mms settings to the phone.

Thanks guys for the info.
i will try the wap and mms settings first by entering manually but if i have to do the cingular flex thing i have used your info to download a cingular flex file and might have to try that.
using the tutorial i have the file and the usb data cable but i am unsure what the PST programmer is??
is this something i can download or will i have to buy it?
the phone came with some software but i havent really looked it over yet as i didnt think there would be a problem buying this phone but oh well i guess cingular wants their piece of the pie every time!!
thanks again

OK so far i have found PST 5.81 can i use this version or do i need to keep looking for PST 6.7?
one more question if i get this working can i just do the cingular flex and leave the rest of the firmware alone or do i have to flash it as well??
thanks again

OK its about 1:00 am or so and i have been trying to apply the info from the cingular site on mms/wap settings to my v3i however a couple of questions have come up
1)after findind the websessions folder i am supposed to select MMS but there are a half dozen settings but all are prenamed,no plain MMS available, and also when trying to edit one of these there is no gateway ip no1 or no2 instead there is a line for proxy1 and 2
2)when trying to make the correct setting for the wap/browser it says to go to web sessions and select cingular or media net and there is neither available to select, however i can make a new entry and fill in all the info EXCEPT like the above description , there is no line for the gateway ip 1 or 2, just a line entry for proxy 1 or 2
also when messing around with this i became unable to send/recieve regular text msgs and i had thought they were seperate from the settings i was changing
thanks for any help

This is a known, very easy fix...along with everything else you need to know to get it up and running on Cingular. Just go to Motomodders.net and read the forums on the V3i.

For the voicemail issue this can be fixed via a seem edit.
SEEM 0032_0001 offset 02 -
bit 1: BLOCKS THESE FEATURES: Call barring, Call transfer, Info Services, do not read VM number from SIM, Voicemail ^@ text messages, Multi-Line Support, My Network List, Manual Network Search (1 on, 0 off - set to 0 to UNBLOCK these features) some of these features may be SIM dependant anyway, so activating it on your phone may not actually allow you to use it
bit 4: ^@ and _@ VM Indicator SMS Msgs (1 off, 0 on) (**DOES NOT WORK RELIABLY**)
Try bit 4 first - if that doesn't work do bit 1
It could be a struggle to find a V3i flex for Cingular - I think they only recently released that model.
Make sure the sms service centre number is set correctly for the text messages
You need the correct MMS settings - you should be able to find them at motomodders.net
