Alright, first let me say I have had very little problems overall with VZW (other than customer service), reception has been fine, plans, etc. Today however I was quite upset to find out a few details regarding my contract. Here's what happened.
I was on my parents plan for a year (with a 2 year contract). I turned 18, therefore I wanted to switch plan over to my name. That was about a year into the 2 year contract. I ask the lady, when I did that, can I get a new phone and will the contract expiration date stay the same. No you can't get a new one and the expiration date will stay the same. Fine, so I get to looking a my bill a few months later and the expiration date was 2 years from the date I switched to contract over (granted, I should have read the fine print, but being 18 I trusted the CSR). Verizon says theres nothing they can do about it. Well, a little upset but I can deal with it.
So last nov, with about a year left on my newly extended contract, I wanted to see if I could upgrade my plan (from older plan to America's Choice). I opted for a year upgrade to AC plan, therefore my contract should end the same date. A few months later I bought a push to talk phone (not from VZW), not knowing I had to have a push to talk plan. I just choose to upgrade to PTT plan, clearly asked CSR if it would change my contract expiration, no it will not affect it.
Now last month I changed back to a regular phone (non PTT), asked if it would change expiration again "no, it will not change contract end date". Guess what, get confirm in the mail, new contract end date, august 08. Now I'm leaving the country for a while next year, so this time I'm quite upset. Went in today, talked to the same lady that changed from PTT (a manager), asked her why the paper said 2008, "because you changed your plan". I said well I specifically asked you if it would and you said no. Explained that I was leaving country. Her response "I was talking about EQUIPMENT contract date." Huh?? I haven't bought a new phone from VZW since I started on my parents plan in 2003, I wouldn't even think the equip contract still applies. "Well, you didn't explain all that about leaving the country, you should have been more specific..". I wasn't even aware equipment and plan are on two seperate contracts. It would logically seem to me when I ask someone when my contract ends, I'm talking about the PLAN contract, yes, the one I pay $70 a month for.
Anyway, she said she would see what she could do, which sounded like a ploy to get me to leave, but I don't see anything happening. No sorry for the trouble or thanks for your 3 years of on time payments when I left. So what I'm wondering is, assuming that she doesn't do anything about it, is there any way I can get out of my contract without paying the $175 fee? It's not so much that I can't afford the fee, but it's quite annoying as many times as I've switched contracts. Sorry for the long-winded post btw, its just everytime I have a problem it seems like the VZW people are powerless to do anything at all.
