Instead of going on and on yet once again, I will post the message that I sent to Samsung tech support:
---
I am a soldier stationed in South Korea and I bought this phone off post. It came with no software of any kind. I have downloaded the software from the Samsung global site, but it is all in Korean. I have had several Korean soldiers try to help me, but for some reason the PC Link software says that it is not compatible with my type of phone.
The main reason that I wanted to use this software is so that I could upload MP3s to the phone etc. But, I have figured out that the PC Link software is really not 'neccissary' for this function. I can actually connect the USB and I can browse through the stuff on the little drive that pops up as if I were to connect an external hard drive (After I found the function INSIDE the phone menu itself).
Anyhow, the reason I wrote all of that is to provide you with all of the information that I possibly could so that you would not tell me to try something that I already haven't.
I really would like to know:
After I have placed the mp3 file in the appropriate folder on the internal drive of my phone, it will show up in the file manager inside my phone. BUT, when I go to the MP3 player, it tells me that it is not a valid format? I don't understand this. There was a default 'mp3' file that was in there, kinda like a sample song or something, but the extension was .smp. It plays fine, but even after I tried several conversions from mp3 to smp and several others, my mp3 files simply will not play.
Could you please point me in the right direction as to how to properly upload and/or convert music files so that they will be accessable from within my phone.
I think it may perhaps be a built in function that comes with the PC Link software, but I really have no proof of this. Could you perhaps look into that as well?
I understand that your site may not deal with the other global phones or whatnot, but this is a last ditch effort to get some support for such a great phone.
I have scoured the internet and I can't seem to fix my problem. I have finally found an English version of the PC Link software and it cannot connect properly to my phone, it just goes on and on and on trying to connect, until it finally times out.
Yes, I have the proper CDMA Modem drivers installed.
I hope that I have been thorough enough in my explanation and I hope that you can help me find what I'm looking for.
Thanks EMMENSLY fo your time.

This seems like a great place to search for help, and Lord knows it definately cannot be any worse than that of Samsung's tech support.
Thanks for your time guys!

Have you tried renaming the file extension from mp3 to smp?

Yes, AND I have also done an actual ~conversion~ from MP3 to SMP as well. SMP format is something called (SampleVision) or something lame I had never even heard of before getting this phone. The conversion never works either.
I feel like I'm at my wits end with this phone. It is an awesome phone, it's just this mystery that I want to unlock. Anyhow, even when the sample file was in the directory, I was still not able to assign the MP3 to a ringtone. I think the MP3 function is strictly for playing MP3s, like on a bus or something like that. Everyone want's to compete with a iPod.
I don't know why I even bother with trying to figure this damn function out. I just can't stand being beat by a machine.
On another note, it is possible to download MP3s from the net and they go in a special folder. However, I think it has to be from the designated site that comes built into the phone, because I uploaded an MP3 to my server and tried to surf there using the URL function on my phone, and it told me that it wasn't a valid page to navigate to I tried
And any hints on this would be greatly appreciated too.

Oh yea, and I would also like to point out that when I have the file named as MP3, the file itself is viewable from the system's file manager, however, it is not viewable from the MP3 file manager. But, when it is named with an SMP extension, it is viewable, but it just won't play, giving the 'Invalid format' message.
I don;t know why I never thought of this, but I had my wife, who is Korean, scour the net for me on all of the Korean sites she could find for it. She found the exact thing that I needed in a matter of minutes. She went to the site of the service provider, 'Anycall' and downloaded the PCLink Manager that was appropriate for the phone.
Thanks for the help, I have all of the problems solved.
Regards,
-Jerome

Any way you can fill those of us without Korean speaking spouses on how to transfer mp3s to the phone that actually work. Also, did you manage to turn an mp3 file into a ringtone. The Korean ringtones really get on my nerves, I'd much rather havea custom one if possible.
I tried visiting the anycall website to download their PC Manager Plus software but unfortunately there are no English options for the website and it requires one to register on the site before downloading.
Any help with my new phone would be GREATLY appreciated.

well ive managed to get my hands on the program, though i can't read any of it i've managed to get to the music section. i've even managed to convert mp3-smp with it. i've sent it to my phone, and instead of the usual invalid format... i get an error saying unauthorized access. any clues as to why?

Hey, sorry for my late reply. I'll walk ya through it
I don't know the menu setup for your phone, but here is what I do.
Menu>5>0>1 This takes me to my internal drive so I can explore the contents on my computer.
Open the folders System>mp3: This is where you dump the .smp files. Note, I have tried to organize my folder of music by placing sub folders, and my phone doesnt read em. You have to just dump all the mp3s in that root folder.
Alright, as far as the PC Manager Plus.
Plug your phone into the USB. Start PC Manager Plus. You will most likeley need to have an Anycall login name, which you can only do if you are a Korean citizen (Most Korean websites that require you to sign up have you put in a Korean 'social security' number. My wife did this for me.). Again I don;t know what version of the PC Manager you have. You may use my login stuff if you want. USERNAME: phinnie PASSWORD: dolphin80. You need to visit the Anycall site to download the PC Manager. YOu need to login with the above information to download the client. Please don;t screw with the user settings, it will just make everyone who is trying to get this stuff for their phone's life miserable
After you log in, your phone should light up as it is connecting to your computer. If it doesn't don't panic, you don;t really need it to connect to your phone in order to convert the MP3s to SMP. You click the 6th little button from the bottom, that leads you to the music section. (YOu can tell it's the music button because the animation shows a CD and some musical notes)
It will download some music software to your computer.
After the download you will have this new screen to view. It's just a media player in essence. Now, depending on your computer setting, you may or may not be able to view Korean characters. So all the text may look garbled or appear as ? marks. For this reason, I will just name the links by numbers and post screenshots.
Ok, in this new screen. Click the very bottom link, a picture of a computer. You will see the text PC and some korean next to it.
The first tree uption under the menu is the library, click it. Now right click inside that window. 5th option down opens a browse window to locate and place mp3s to the library. After you are finished adding the files, click the box next to the ones that you want to convert to SMP (There is a select all box above your songs in the window.)
Now, after you have selected your song(s) Right click any of them. You should see the option MP3 -> SMP in that list. You will see it regardless of being able to read Korean or not But just in case your computer acts funky, it is the 3rd from the bottom.
K, now you are in the conversion window. Don;t worry about filling in the box with the phone number, you don't need to. The two bottom buttons in this window are OK and CANCEL. Left one is OK. The next button up is the Browse button where it lets you choose where to save the converted filed. I just do my desktop.
After the thing finishes, connect your phone to your pc, open up your phones hard drive, however you accomplish this for your phone. Dump the files. Voila!
As far as converting your ringtones, yes you can do that too! In the screenshot I labled the area.
You navigate to the LAST option available unter the PC tree, right click inside the open area, then click the first menu item. Search for a ringtone file to add. If your phone is connected, you need to click the little transfer icon at the bottom of the open area. Looks like an iPod with eft and right arrows next to it.
In order to convert the mp3 files to the proper format, you will need to find the program on the internet. It's easy to find, please search for it in google so I don;t have to write a tutorial about that too Look for something that converts MP3 to MMF. That's the format my phone uses. SOme phones only work with ma2,ma3,ma4 etc
My program only converts the first minute of the mp3 file though, so if there is a certain part you want to have in the ringer, you will need to edit the mp3 file yourself, again, search the internet for the software.
I hope this helps. If anyne has further questions about Anycall software, please don;t hesitate to email me: xaero@getkilled.net. I will no longer monitor this board.
Aight, I'll post some screenies.
EDIT: SORRY, AT THIS TIME THE SERVER THE SCREENSHOTS ARE HOSTED ON IS DOWN. I'LL TRY AND GET THEM UP ASAP.
