I am not one to rush out and buy the latest cell phone but the timing of the VX8500 (Chocolate) release coincided with my Verizon "2 free phones every 2 years" promotion. After reading sevral positive reviews I felt it would be a perfect fit for my wife, functional and cool looking.
We picked up the phone from a Verizon store last Monday and had the battery die 3 times after being fully charged with virtually no talk time and no power draining features enabled. We returned the phone on Friday of that week and the replacement phone seems to have the same issue. At this point no matter how cool the phone is I may need to switch to a phone that actually holds a charge and looks boring.
The techs at the store said this was the first VX8500 that was returned but the sales people said yeah we heard about this issue from several people.
Has anyone else experienced issues with the battery life or heard any rumors on this possible issue?

My battery died a lot but a friend showed me this trick. If you go into the menu and hit the 0 (zero) button a screen pops up the code for that screen is 00000 Five zeros. From that you go to network select, then mode preference. Then go to your last option 1x only and the battery lasts all day.
The problem with this is that the vcast will not work. If you want to use vcast you can just switch it back.
Good Luck

noabrroks-
Thanks for the advice on my issue. I just adjusted my wife's phone to the X1 only. I did notice that the menu required six zeros (000000) on her phone not five. Maybe the firmware was different than yours.
Will this only effect VCast? I would hate to degrade her fancy new phone by using a hard set network configuration.
Before I adjusted the network I removed her 1GIG micro SD card earlier today and noticed that her battery seems to be holding the charge better. Maybe with the combination of setting and removing the card she'll gat an adequate battery life.

I've been using my Chocolate for about two weeks now with no battery problems. I wouldn't say that I talk a lot on the phone. Probably average of 30 minutes a day. I will have it off the charger for 14 hours at a time with no problems. When I do put it on the charger, it seems to be back up to full charge within 15-20 minutes.
I travel outside of my home network area every day, so it is 'roaming' (don't know if that affects battery life). Also, I'm in non-VCast markets. We're supposed to get VCast in my home market at the end of next month. I'll have to watch and see if that changes my battery life.

I had battery problems with my Chocolate. But I didn't want to hassle with the phone because it has other gaping problems that I couldn't live with so I returned it for the 8300 and no issues with it yet.

If u r out of a service area your battery will last only a few hours. It uses a lot of power looking for service. I have to shut mine down at work becuase I go in and out of cell range.

I work in downtown Omaha, NE on the 11/12th floor. I didn't get a bad signal, was constantly 3/4 bars. At home averaged 2-3 depending on part of apartment.

Since I am not in a vCast area I went ahead and turned mine off also, thanks for the advice. FYI The navigation works with the phone setup this way.
