And there are so many countries that text messages aren't received (Serbia for one) .. but when I tried that, it appeared that the txt msg went through. I asked my buddy on the other end if he ever received them and he said no. (Good thing I wasn't proposing to him, huh!?)
The good thing is that at least they did not appear on my bill, but it would have been nice if I'd received some kind of error message instead.

There's an easy way around international texting fees. Just figure out the mobile phone email address of the person you text internationally, and save it in your phone's contacts.
Most carriers assign email addresses to phones, you just have to figure out what carrier you're dealing with for the @ domain, for example 1231231234@mobile-service.com. There's usually a 160 character limit per message.
Here's the info for US carriers:
Cingular
0001112222@cingularme.com
AT&T Wireless (just in-case)
0001112222@mobile.att.net
Nextel
0001112222@messaging.nextel.com
Sprint PCS
0001112222@messaging.sprintpcs.com
T-Mobile
0001112222@tmomail.net
Verizon Wireless
0001112222@vtext.com
Virgin Mobile
0001112222@vmobl.com
There is also a service called Teleflip, http://www.teleflip.com/
With this, you can just enter in the person's 10 digit number@teleflip.com

any info (like the US email addresses above) for sending one to Telstra in Australia from the US?
I have Virgin Mobile and that is the only method they give me to send an International text.
thanks.

How does it know if an email is international?
I had problems sending SMS messages to Comviq customers in Sweden from the U.S. We were not receiving anything. In some research on the internet it says that Verizon does not have agreements with all international providers, so it may not work. I cancelled my account and reactivated my Cingular account. When I did this, all the text messages they had sent me started coming through.
