I bought a new SLVR L7 (The unlocked non-iTunes international version) and went to the cingular store to sign up. They signed me up really quickly, and I was happy... until I make my first phone call.
My friend, whom I never had reception issues with in the past, said to me on my first phone call to her with my new phone, "wow you sound like shit now, I dont like your new phone".
ugh!

I delt with it for about a week, having MANY DROPPED calls... really bad reception, people not hearing me, me not hearing anyone... even at times it seemed like my phone froze up (kinda like a frozen PC when it crashes) and I couldnt hang up a call - I had to power cycle the phone just to get it to hang up one time!
So I then go back to the Cingular store to ask for help... thought maybe they could check it out for me. Well since I didnt buy it from their store, they basically refused to help me.

Next, I called the customer service # trying to get help. The woman was very nice to me, and tried to help, but couldnt. She said my account seemed all in order, except they didnt know what kind of phone I had. So i read to her the long # on the SIM chip, and the IMEI #. She then said it still didnt tell her what kind phone it was, which was wierd.
She transferred me to their tech support dept for further help.... I then talked to a nice gentleman about my plight (many dropped calls, bad service, etc) and he then explained to me that my phone, is actually a "generic phone", not made for any particular carrier and thats why my service has been really shitty. He said that their phones, branded with the Cingular logo, has special technology inside which help them work very well with Cingular. After another question about why I couldnt download any apps onto my phone (which was met with the same answer.. generic phone, not compatible), we came to the conclusion that im S.O.L. and thats that.

So sorry for the long post.. but im now stuck with a great phone, but absolute shitty service - and I live on Long Island, close to NY City, where one would think I have great service almost anywhere!

The reason I went with an unlocked SLVR was that I really HATE iTunes, and I dont want to have to deal with their propritary music formats & costs, and that I heard iTunes only makes the phones work really shitty on top of that.

Anyone have any ideas on what I can do? icon_confused.gif

It's not the service with the sh*tty quality, it's your phone. You already pointed out that the phone freezes sometimes...so how can that be the problem on Cingular's side. I't s a hardware issue. And what do you expect, you bought an international phone, and you expect Cingular to bend over backwards for you? You should have contacted the seller or Motorola about your situation.

Your phone is defective. Have it replaced. And next time, watch your language.

Yeah, as I've menetioned several times, I bought an unlocked D&G V3i from ZoomCell.com, put in my SIM card, and it worked great. I'm not sure I believe the "special software to make the phone work better with Cingular" story, but maybe CPTech or one of the other Cingular reps can comment. OF course, I'm writing this as my D&G is on its way to Moto for the "no service" problem that seem to be cropping up with V3i's of late. And the ever-so-small conspiracy-theory side of me that rears its tiny ugly head from time to time got the quickly-passing idea that maybe Cingular sent me a "bullet" that disabled the phone...Nahhh, ...icon_surprised.gif))

did you try performing a second-level reset? that is, removing the battery while the phone is still on? i had a lady with a cingular phone whose keypad wouldn't respond at all...fixed it with a second-level reset. also found out she NEVER turns her phone off.

powercycle the phone frequently. at least once a day. the phone is a little computer. it needs a chance to reboot and clear its memory every so often. also, it gets hot and stays hot. good idea to turn it off and let it rest and cool off for a while.

anyway, i'm not saying that a second-level reset will fix your phone...only that it is worth a shot. if the phone is genuinely defective or if there truly is some compatibility issue between the phone and cingular, then nothing will help.

if you bought the phone new, then perhaps you can return it to whomever sold you the phone or to motorola...but i'm not too sure about that...just something you could look into.

cheers.

the reason for this is we have a database of IMEI numbers for OUR phones. since you have a non-cingular phone, our billing system is not able to find the IMEI number and, therefore, not the manufacturer/model either. it is no big deal...it just means our billing system can't print the manufacturer/model to the screen...so it prints "UNKNOWN". it doesn't affect the call quality at all.

browsing the online user manual, i myself cant seem to find anything about voice memos. i find voice dial, but not voice memos. are you sure the phone supports voice memos?

you can view both step-by-step tutorials and the user manual at cingular.com. support >> phone/device support. choose your phone's manufacturer & model & click the orange "next" button.

i'm not saying this is the case with your phone, but, in my limited experience (and it truly is limited), phones that work great at first but gradually have worse and worse service problems are usually never or almost never turned off.

just out of curiosity, how frequently did you turn your phone off so it could re-boot and/or cool down? sometimes a hardshock (second-level reset) or a new sim can correct such issues.

Good point. I would go for a few to several days at a time before remembering to cycle it off and back on. And occasionally, it would "hang up", forcing me to pull the battery out. That would happen with my old V3 as well, which incidently, the screen went out on yesterday. It boots up fine, but as soon as I close the screen half, the screen goes dark and won't come back unless I reboot. The phone still works, but no screen. It's not been a good week for Razrs around here...Off it will go to Moto.
As for the SIM, I'm all for replacing it, but when the D&G quit, I got the old V3 out, inserted the SIM and everything was fine...until yesterday. And I did the master reset and master clear in the D&G, but to no avail.
