FYI.. I have the same problem. I just got my phone from a Rogers Dealer, and I can't use mp3's as ringtones or alerts. Which blows.
I'm not to crazy about debranding the phone, so I've been searching for alternatives. I went back to where got the phone and the tech said to use mp4's and make sure the files are short, 20 seconds.
So far I've managed to find that the easiest way to make mp4's is to use itunes to make .m4a and then just rename the extension to mp4. Apparently this is valid. I've put both types of files on my phone, and the mp3 player will play both of them.... but still no ringtone. Next I'm going to try to cut the files length and see if that helps.
if anyone has a better solution please post.. I’ve spent too many hours f'ing with this.
thx

I just got this phone today, and was a bit bummed when i couldn't get the mp3's to work as ringtones. (Unflashed with rogers). But, you can convert mp3's to wavs (16000 khz max) and use that as ringtones. The downside of course being that it takes up more space, but you'd only need the first few seconds of a song for a ringtone anyways.
Sometimes it pays to read the manual before jumping on the forums.

I actually thought of doing that, but using disc2phone it reverts it to mp3. I hadn't got around to just putting it on there. But thanks for letting me know it works!

Yeah i didn't install anything off the disk. I just plugged it in and let XP do it's thing. Then i just moved the wav file over to the phone card. Make sure you're recording your wav's at no more than 16000 kHZ or you'll get a "cannot play file" error on your phone when you try to use the file.

ay yoh i found a way to get your mp3 ringtones working on your fone as a ringtune.
If you plug in your USB or even your bluetooth device and roam the phone open up your "ringtunes" folder there you will see what songs you have in that folder...the next step is just to click and drag the song that you want as a ringtone into the "ringtune" folder and thats basically it.

..... sorry i forgot to say that you would need to have a DRM converter because if you are like me that got my fone from rogers they have blocked off that feature you can download that feature from here http://developer.sonyericsson.com/site/global/home/p_home.jsp
its simple to use just download the program once downloaded
click add choose the song on your computer that you want as a ringtone
and click resume this will allow the song that you want as a ringtone to be used. now simply just go back to the folder in wich you originally chose the song from you will see that you have a DRM folder created
click and drag that song into the ringtune folder you can do this through your USB or via bluetooth Click>Drag
the go into the MENU>FILE MANAGER?RINGTUNES> and there you should be able to select more then use as and finally use it as a ringtone im not sure why this is rogers just wants to take more money from us..but with the DRM software you should be able to do so.
i hope that this info helps you out...
cheers!

I figured out there is a 600 KB limit on ringtones for
the Sony W300i Cingular version.
As long as the MP3 is 600KB or less it will work.
The same is true for .WAV files, they must be 600KB or less.
Anyone know of a firmware hack, or code, to change this limit ?
Anyone know if the limit exists for MP3's as ringtones from the Memory Stick ? I dont have a memory stick yet.
Thanks,
Silentguy

I just ran into this problem last night when a friend shared an mp3 I wanted to use as a ringtone via bluetooth. I can use the mp3 as a "message alert" and "alarm" but not as ringtone? That's does me no good.. Anyone find a quick fix?
