TrancyTara have you figured out how to use your existing MP3 files as a ringtone?
I was wondering if you drop the whole folder or just grab the ringtones only into the ringtunes folder my contact at fido said that you must have the whole folder with the sub folder that said RIGHTS I am not entirely sure about it but then it worked for me I have made a few ringtones with the DRM Packager for my son's W300i phone.Unless your service provider actually blocked that feature entirely?

Alrite i found a way how to fix this thing. cause i fixed mine. I downloaded this program and learned how to use it
What you gotta do is
1. Download DRM Packager for Sony Ericson
2. After opening the program go to Options -> Configuration and change the following :
3. DRM method: forward-lock
4. Specify where you want the decoded file to be saved (i used desktop for convenience)
5. Leave everything else as is
6. Make sure Encoding type is binary
7. Press on Add... and import the song
8. When it finished protecting the file go to desktop (* or where you saved your file)
9. Make sure the icon of the decoded file looks like a box with a lock ( thats the one you use)
10. Drop it into the phones ringtune folder and youre done!
Worked for me. and i was never more happier!
If you dont know where to donwload a program get a general downloading program like Arestra and get it from there, its really easy

I have the w300i and Im with Rogers. I tried using the DRM packager and created the .dm file but it doesn't play on my phone. It says "Unable to play file". Any thoughts or suggestions?

I hate to be a bother but I want to make sure before I buy the w300i that you can connet it to the computer via usb and add contacts. The software that comes with it from sony can't do this I'm told. Will outlook work or is there another way? Any help I would appricate.
thanks

I have found a workaround, but it is of a lower quality.
You can record a sound using the sound recorder. Place phone to speaker and record music. That can be used as ringtune.
Second will have to be posted when I am not banned

Now connect your phone using the cable that came with it keep the disc handy just in case your computer ask for the driver . Do not use Disc2Phone to transfer the file , rather click start goto my computer click your phone but not the phone card navigate to the ringtunes folder grab the drm folder from your computer either copy and paste or drag and drop it in the phones rintunes folder and there you have it enjoy your new MP3 ringtones .
The DRM Packeger converts your MP3 files into a protected file fooling the phone ,by reading the new file as a store bought ringtone I think . At any rate experiment with your ringtones spread the joy and help others .

Found this on the Net: worked PERFECTLY!
Roger's won't be making no extra money from me! HA!
I had a hard time seeing if anyone posted an answer to this, so i'll post my own workaround (without debranding the phone)
My phone is branded for Rogers Wireless (ontario/canada)
It wont let me set my mp3's as ringtunes (the option is greyed out)
phone: w810i
However, you'll notice that the mp3's that CAME with the phone CAN be set as ringtunes. So, something is up.
The mp3s CAN play if you add DRM to them (digital rights management)
To do this, go to:
http://developer.sonyericsson.com/site/global/docstools/misc/p_misc.js p
then download:
DRM Packager 1.33 - Windows - (2 MB) March 7, 2006
This application requires Windows 2000/XP
Install this program.
Open it, and click 'add' to find an mp3 file that you wanna add rights management to.
Make sure 'device type' is set to SonyEricsson
in the config section, i have DRM method set to FORWARD-LOCK (this worked for me)
check 'place created content in a drm subfolder'
check 'place right in sep folder'
encoding type: binary
the rest leave unchecked
Now, click 'create drm content'
it will make a file with an extension of DM instead of MP3
(this is okay, cuz the filename is now embedded)
drop that file on your w810i, and you can now click on it and choose "USE AS->RINGTUNE"
note: when selecting it as ringtune, my phone told me that it would not be able to use it for voice ringtune. however, i tried calling my phone, and it seemed to work just fine.
Hope this helps someone.

No I haven't. I did what I was told to do but afterwards, it wouldn't work and the song I wanted to use had a picture of a key next to it so I assumed that had something to do with it. I finally gave up on it.

Hi! Just wanted to thank everyone who offered assistance on this. I received the Sony Ericson W300i (Rogers provider) as a gift and was peeved to learn you would have to *buy* ringtones! Errr.
Anyway, this is quite an easy process to convert mp3 to .dm file, but it can get confusing. Here are the steps I took, incase someone might need 'em.
first: Download DRM packager (google it)
CONVERT MP3 file into .dm file:
1. Open DRM Packager program
2. Click on> options: configuration:
3. Select> DRM METHOD: forward-lock
4. CHECK MARK: place created content in a “DRM subfolder” under original content
5. CHECK MARK: place rights in separate folder (under DRM subfolder)
6. Make sure “Encoding type: binary” is selected
7. Leave everything else unchecked.
8. CLICK ON “OK”
9. CLICK> Add… {search for your desired music file}
10. Then click on “CREATE DRM CONTENT”
11. You should now have a .dm file
12. Close DRM Packager program
Retrieve .dm file and use as ringtone
1. Open “my computer”
2. Look for DRM folder (should be where you retrieved your music files)
3. Open DRM folder
4. Open subfolder: “rights”
5. COPY (Right click on) your new .dm music file (songfilename.dm) (The file should have a gold padlock icon beside it)
6. Before you proceed, make sure your phone is now connected to your computer (mine is via usb cable)
7. OPEN “MY COMPUTER”> OPEN> F: drive (or whatever drive the phone is)
8. Click Audio> then Ringtones> then PASTE copied music file (.dm) into this folder
9. Give it a minute to process, then disconnect phone from computer
10. In your phone, go to RINGTONES folder> your new .dm file should be there and ready to use! (select “set as ringtone”)
Hope this helps you!
Thanks again for all the other tutorials!
I love my mp3 ringtones!
