I may have your answer. I was having the same problem with a Z710i from Fido. Couldn't even use the MP3 ringtones that came with the phone. Asked at a Fido kiosk, and while they weren't aware of the problem, they had a solution for phones which wouldn't play MP3's that were perceived to be missing the DigitalRightsManagement (DRM). Anyway, there's an application on the Sony Developer site that will put the appropriate settings in any MP3 file (you would think they'd want to prevent anyone from using this, but not our issue).
Steps:
1. Download the DRM Packager 1.33 (or 3.0 for Mac) from http://developer.sonyericsson.com/site/global/docstools/misc/p_misc.js p
(has other toys too. If you have trouble getting the download to start and you're using Firefox, switch to IE)
2. Open it and install it
3. Drag and drop your original MP3 onto it
4. Hit "Create DRM Content" and it creates a subdirectory where the original was with the new file with an icon that looks like a block and key
5. Connect to phone with Bluetooth or USB. Do not Open Phone (this is important so that you go through their FileManager - you can't just copy the file onto the memory).
6. Drag & drop the new MP3 onto the root of the phone (i.e. the icon for the phone itself). The phone will respond almost immediately asking if you want to use the file now.
I had my doubts about whether this was the problem, but it works. Even made the MP3s supplied with the phone work. Also note this doesn't affect the phone itself so you don't have to worry about damaging anything or risking the warranty. It only changes external files.
Good luck

you can't have the entire song as a ringtone. it must be a clip smaller than 600k in size.

Hey, this is to everyone giving the step by step directions. Let's get very specific here. I am having trouble creating the correct file to go onto my phone. I have tried a million different ways to "Create DRM Content" . What are the settings? I am doing exactly what the directions say (to whoever gave directions) and nothing is working for my phone! Do you have to change any of the CONFIGURATION settings? For example, Forward & Lock? or Seperated? or Combined? or Sony Ericsson? I am confused. And do you have to "Save List"??? Please help and give all the specific directions. And what exactly does the icon look like? Does it look like a key and just a box? Or a key and a box with a lock on it? Or what about an open box with a key on the side? I've gotten many different icons when i changed the configuration settings. Please help!!!!! I'm going insane trying to figure this out!
Thanks.

Summer, and ANYONE with this problem, here is how i configured the DRM Packager program. From what I've seen different things work for different people, I own a W300 with Rogers.
So DMR configuration:
Add the file
Go to Options->Configuration
DMR Method: Combined Delivery
If this is the first time you use this option you should get a window with an OK button saying that you have to set some information before, so just click OK (if you dont get this window then just below Configuration in the Options menu you should see that Rights is available to click, use that). You get to another window with a bunch of Tabs (Play, Execute etc) and check boxes. Dont worry about anything but what i tell you.
On the Play tab (show default) check the box Enable Right. Then check Start Time, the current date and time should be set already, if not just set it. Then check End Time box and change the date to say 5-10-20 years in the future, up to you. What this does is its setting the period of time for which you will have the "right" to use the file. As people have said Rogers locks the phone so it only plays ringtones from their site or purchased ones etc, this program adds that copyright to the file and sets it effective on that period of time we just set.
Thats it, click OK then back to the main window click Create DRM Content. The file goes into a folder called DMR which will be inside the folder where your original MP3 file was at (unless specified different).
IMPORTANT: The file will not be in MP3 format or any playable format, therefore your Disc2Phone program will NOT see it. You have to transfer it just as you would transfer any file using a standard USB device. (got to My Computers, Open the device find the folder you want it into and paste).
The folder in which you copy the file (inside your phone) didnt seem to have any relevance as to whether the phone will play it as a ringtone or not. I just copied it as any other song I had in there, and not necesarily in the Rintone folder as some people said it had to be done, but feel free to try it all
I hope this helps its been wroking for me for a while not problems at all.
Cheers
Edit: The icon I get from this is a closed brown box and to its bottom left corner a yellow lock with a pink handle or something =)

O.K. you guys, the easiest way to put your own ring tones on this phone is by using the sound recorder on your phone. (entertainment-record sound) then go to settings-sounds&alerts-ringtone-and select the sound you've just recorded. That's pretty easy. Enjoy

I went through the 6 pages of posts, tried everything - did'nt work.
Then I dicided to heed couple of posts that advised that the file HAS TO BE UNDER 600K.
Worked like a charm!

Hi,
I'm having the same problem with a Samsung phone. The problem is Rogers wireless, they block any ringtunes that does not come from them, even if it's not from a network provider such as Telus, Fido or whatever yours may be depending where you are from. I called them (Rogers) numerous times trying to figure out why I could not assign my ringtones to my contacts, untill finally one was nice enough to give it to me straight, THEY block them.
