I purchased a w380i today and found out much to my dismay that it is locked from playing mp3 ringtones.
However it is not locked from playing .WAV files. So simply bite the bullet and convert your mp3 to a wav and load it on there it will work fine. If, in 3 weeks from today you buy a phone and it doesn't work, I can only assume that the cellphone companies probably watch this board and patched your phone to not play wav's anymore. Which is why I suspect the original workarounds no longer work.
You can even edit the song to make it smaller, or mess with the encoding rate to shrink the size. My phone came with 512 megs so a 30 meg ring tone is not an issue.
If you lack the technical knowledge to convert a file from mp3 to .wav im sure a simple google search will give you the start you need.

I have the w300i and Im with Rogers. I tried using the DRM packager and created the .dm file but it doesn't play on my phone. It says "Unable to play file". Any thoughts or suggestions?
hey this took my like 3 hrs to figure out lol
k I hae a sony erisson W580
i did everything accordingly to converting to DRM and i also shortened th
song to about 30 sec (not sure if that step is necessary though) BUT DO NOT drag the .dm files (the files you coverted that now looks like a box and key) into the phone using windows explorer b/c although the file DRM may show up in your ringtone folder it will just say no file. BUT copy the file and TRANSFER the .dm files using BLUETOOTH WIRELESS TRANSFER on your computer. So no need to plug in your phone using a USB cable.
To do this:
-go to menu-->Settings
-then go to -->Connectivity tab
-select--> bluetooth
Now your phone will recognize surrounding bluetooth so select your computer. your phone for safety reasons will ask you to create a pw that your phone and computer will have to type in. After you do that just transfer it.
-afterwards your cell phone will ask you what you want to do with the new file like play or what not. just select ringtune
Hope this helps, I realize these posts were written a year ago.
