as far as i know, the 6230 can hold upto ~150 text messages. since the past few weeks i've been getting 'no space for new text messages' though the inbox has just 55 messages

You can't. I'm guessing you get MMS and SMS with more than 1 page (what I mean by 1 page is 160 characters). You probably do not delete the delivery report as well.
I know it's kind of annoying when we need the delivery report feature but it takes up SMS space as well when we don't delete the report manually.
I set my phone to automatically delete the oldest message when space is required, for both inbox and outbox.

nope, i don't have mms. not all the sms are more than 1 page. and i have set the delivery report status to off. i do not get the delivery reports.
anyother possible way?

If the messages are not very important, you can set your phone to automatically delete the oldest message when a new one comes in.
