sorry, I don't know too much. story is i've been using a nokia 6160 that was on AT&T pay-as-you-go, but then suncom took me over and then they discontinued my prepaid plan, then they put me on something called eastman plan which was .10 per min postpaid (that was GREAT, no roam no LD). i have been running less than $10 month just for very light use. now suncom is stopping tdma service for me next week. so,
1) does anyone else offer prepaid tdma service? should I do this?
1A) will tdma go away and when?
2) should I give up and do gsm?
3) if gsm, I'm in NC and probably either Cing or tmobile; what do you think?
4) what is all this talk about unlocking phones?

1 & 1a) No one that I'm aware of uses TMDA with pre-paid, I mean Cingular may, but not for long. FCC has stated that carriers no longer need to provide TDMA after it's either Feb '07 or '08 (sorry don't remember since it doesn't affect T-Mobile)
2) As much as I hate to say it, yes. HOWEVER keep in mind that GSM isn't all that bad, it is the service of the future.
3) Use the following site to check your prepaid coverage (if that's what you were going to use) in the area: http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/prepaid.aspx Most of our coverage in the Carolina's is roaming and 85% of the time prepaid can't roam. If you're going post page then just look at http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage
4) When a manufacturer makes a phone for a carrier, a lock is put in place so that it can only be used on that carriers network. Now, because of how GSM works with SIM cards, this lock applies to what type of SIM can be used in it. IE: Cingular locked phone will only work with Cingular SIM. Now, most GSM carriers will provide you with the code (after a period of time) to take this lock off your phone and then you can use it with any carrier that uses a SIM
Hope this helps!

since you got switched to suncom, I'm assuming you're not able to get cingular in your area?

originally some reason at&t had to move us to suncom not cing. but suncome was OK so we stayed awhile. now, their prepaid service for gsm will be minimum $20 per month w/ expirations, etc. for two years nether my wife or I have had this much bill. she runs about $7 month I run about $3. that's why I am looking at prepaid. But, the .25 minumte for cing puts me off, and Tigress says I may have trouble with t mobile coverage. now what?

why i asked is because the fcc wouldn't allow some att accounts to be taken to cingular due to monopolies in those areas, but cingular has a prepaid option of 100.00 that will last a full year and give approx. 400 minutes. one of the best options around.
1) does anyone else offer prepaid tdma service? should I do this?
not for new actvations, and no you shouldn't, and you can't.
1A) will tdma go away and when?
tdma will go away like tigress said in feb. 2008 cingular will shutdown tdma service.
2) should I give up and do gsm?
yes
3) if gsm, I'm in NC and probably either Cing or tmobile; what do you think?
check this for cingular http://onlinecare.cingular.com/support/maps.do
4) what is all this talk about unlocking phones? just like tigress said. cingular will give the unlock code after 90 days following a certain criteria.
