I wouldnt call that a solution, since it doesnt work for everyone, and it is severely limited.
Im looking for a way that works for me, I dont have a data plan ot tzones, just the phonecallas and text messages. I can bluetooth my phone files, but they dont work.
Is there a(nother) way to encode mp3s with DRM, that doesnt include sending them to your phone through some convoluted method?
Frizzi:
The Samsung T619 (T-Mobile), can definitely play your own music as a ring tone or caller ring tone. I am doing it every day on my phone. I have set up a Jimmy Buffett song (Pirate Looks At Forty) to be my generic ring tone, and quite a few other songs to be ring tones specific to people that call me.
With free software available on line (for both PC and Mac), a Mp3 file can be converted to Mp4 with the AAC format. After it is converted the song file name will end in .M4a. If the .M4a is changed to .3pg, the song will be usable once it is ported over to the phone. I am doing this on an Apple Macintosh using software known as Max. Other people in previous posts have identified the name of software that can do this on a PC.
Have you tried the methods identified in earlier posts without any success?
The post by Grant420 apparently works on a PC. If you have a Macintosh, or know someone that does, I would be happy to guide you through it on a Mac. In my earlier posts, I have identified the method I used on the Macintosh.
Let me know if I can assist.

I am VERY computer literate(I think you meant .3gp not .3pg), and I have done all the steps multiple times. Everything works well, and I get to the step where the song is in fact highlighted as a selectable tone, I can select it but when I try to save it is says NOT SUPPORTED CONTENT, and it will not allow me to save it. The only thing I can think of is that I JUST got the phone through an upgrade, and I am using my last phones SIM card.
Maybe they updated the firmware/software, or maybe somehow its my old SIM card. Im off to class now but I will check back here when I return to see if anyone has posted some thoughts on this.
Thanks!

I do not think your SIM card has anything to do with it. My SIM card came out of my 3 year old phone, and everything works fine. If you just got the phone, it has the latest firmware in place.
Select your song, and from the phone's menu check its properties (options #10). Does it show the type to be 3gp? How much memory is the song taking up, and how did you convert it to .3gp? Can the music player play it okay?
It is possible to make it work. Something with your file must be off.

Yes it shows it to be 3gp. It is less than 50kb, and I converted it with Quicktime Pro. Yes, the music player plays it. I tried this with multiple files, converting it with multiple programs at different settings. Nothing. I really regret buying this phone, not only do I have to deal with this NONSENSE, but also, NO way to choose anything other than the annoying bleep blops for incoming messages, and I have to HOLD DOWN the side button to light up the time display on the closed phone rather than just press it. I love Samsung, but they let me down here..

All features considered, if you give it a chance I think you might come to like the T619 phone. It really does have a lot going for it. When I initially got it and found I could not use my Mp3 files as ring tones, I was ready to return it to T-Mobile. Luckily, I have now found the 3gp workaround, and the phone is doing everything I want it to.
I know your phone is capable of playing 3gp files as ring tones, and cannot understand why it is not doing it for you. If you want to call me at the University where I teach, and provide me with an e-mail address, I will be happy to send you one of my 3gp files as an attachment. The file I will send is one I am using on my phone, that I know plays as a ring tone. If you have difficulty with it, then the problem is your phone (something is causing a malfunction compared to mine) or some corrupting of the file that is taking place when it is being ported over.
My number at the University is 386-226-6765

Thank you very much for your willingness to help. Although I definitely regret this purchase, seeing how my last phone did EVERYTHING I want this phone too do, and I got it over 2 years ago..
If you have the time, you can email me that file at Frizzi@gmail.com
Ill give it a try and get back to you.

Ok, so I got the file in the email. Sent it to my phone...and it worked instantly. I tried yet again, on no less than 6 different programs to encode a truncated MP3 file and rename it, using multiple configurations each time...every try...Nothing.
Finally, I opend up iTunes. I right clicked the song clip I wanted, selected convert to ACC...did the rename trick, and it worked like a charm.
So, thanks for the patience, and the time. It wasnt necessary, but it is very much appreciated. I can now use a different song for each caller!
Im still not crazy about this phone...but this eased the burn...thanks again!

I am glad that you got it to work.
I had not thought about using Apple's iTunes to convert the file to AAC format and then rename it .3gp, but that clearly is the easiest method talked about yet on this forum. iTunes is available for the Mac and the PC, so everyone can do the conversion the same way.
I hope other people that have been keeping track of this thread see this post. You have hit on a gold mine with your way of doing it.
It is too bad that Samsung and T-Mobile did not make the phone capable of playing the Mp3 files as ring tones, but at least there is a work around.

Agreed. I dont know if it is my configuration or what...but nothing I did would get it to work. Even after getting it to work through iTunes, I used the same file in my other conversion programs with no luck.
So, for anyone reading:
1)Take the mp3 file or file segment you want as your ringtone, and place it in your iTines library
2) Right click the file and convert it to ACC
3) Right click the file, hit COPY, then Paste it somewhere you can see it easily, I choose my Desktop
4)Change the file extension from .mp3 to .3gp
5) Send it to your phones music files
6) Apply it, and Bingo!
Takes about..2 minutes from start to finish, minus the 4 days of aggravation it took me to get it down.
Now....to change those damn message tones..

not everyone has Itunes and I will never install it on any of my machines, that is for sure.
glad you got it to work frizzi.
oh, and i'm not all that happy with the holding the sidebar to view the screen when the phone is closed either. nor am i pleased with the camera function button on the side, i sometimes accidently press it while it's closed and inside my pocket...
other than that, i really like this phone, apart from on expandable memory of course. my old samsung slider (t809) was very annoying for other reasons.
