Just got a new t619 from T-Mobile and it's a sexy, sexy phone -- except for one thing -- only mp3s with DRM can be used as ringtones! I've tried all the workarounds for previous samsung phones that I can find, and nothing is working. Here's what I've tried so far:
* Changing file to .3gp .mid does not work. The phone is smarter than that.
* .mmf is not supported.
* Copyright bit in mp3 does absolutely nothing. It's got to be DRM.
* I'm experimenting with .mp3 files that all worked flawlessly on my old Cingular x497, so there aren't any size or bitrate issues. The files play seamlessly, they just won't set as ringtone.
The only solution I can think of so far is to add DRM to my mp3s, and the only software I can find that does it is Media Audio Cutter. It's kind of dinky, and you can't try the DRM feature without buying it, and I don't want to pay $15 for crap software if I don't have to or if it doesn't work.
This phone is brand spanking new and kind of had a stealth launch, so information on the internets is sparse. I did learn that the t629 has nearly identical software but in a different form factor, so any crack that works for the t619 should work for the t629 as well.
I've said it before, I'll say it again -- HELP!

I ordered one of these the day it came out, only got it yesterday due to reasons of where I live and where my account is. Anyhow, I hope some of this can help:
* A midi file isn't a .3gp file, you can't just change an extension and hope the actual format changes. Be careful what container names you apply to files, I've only ever used .3gp for H.624, MP4 and AVI video.
* .mmf is old and useless. One of my quips with the SE T68i was that all ringtones were in .mmf, not even .wav or .mp3, the latter of which I prefer most... Not only are they more available, they're easier to make and sound better.
* I've had no problems with non-drm'd music on this phone.
* I sent the Chev Chelios ringtone from the movie Crank to my phone in .mp3 format (unprotected, got it off teh webs, pretty small file) over bt from my laptop... Worked right away as music, and as a ringtone. I tried a 5:29 song and it was "too long"... Short mp3 clips edited out of my library worked fine.
Where are you getting your music initally? What format does it come in, what player are you using? These things may have something to do with all this, unless your phone is tweaked a bit wrong somehow.

First of all, I know that changing a file's extension doesn't magically change the file type -- but I've read about previous samsung phones "fooled" into using mp3 ringtones when they're otherwise locked by changing the extensions. They saw around that.
Also, I should have mentioned, I'm using the US T-Mobile crippled version of the t619. I was pretty sure it was T-Mobile's firmware that was blocking out the non-DRM'd mp3s as ringers. What a crock. I wish I could debrand this thing, it's a kick ass little phone.

finally someone actually started a t619 thread. i had the same problem i tried changing the file extension and it didnt work you actually have to convert the mp3 to 3gp. the quality is almost unchanged if you set it to the highest settings. anyways i used xilisoft the trial version although in the trial version it only lets you convert 2 mins at the max... but no ringtone is that long anyways.
these are the steps i used to get it to work
1. install the xilisoft 3gp-video-converter trial version http://www.xilisoft.com/3gp-video-converter.html
2. once installed load the file you need to convert, drag and drop method etc. just get it on.
3.select the song you wish to convert if more than one at a time highlight them all.
4. (for the highest quality) you can just go ahead and click the minus sign on general and video in the upper right hand corner of the program. but for audio first set these options
Audio Codec: mpeg4aac
BitRate: 256
SampleRate: 48000
Channels: 2(Stereo)
Disable Audio: False
5. at the bottom MAKE SURE the settings read.....
Profile: 3GPP - 3rd Generation Partnership Project (*.3gp)
Zoom: Letterbox
Split: Infinite
Destination: (whereever you want i chose desktop)
6. Click Encode. It'll ask you to register just clik later or w/e and it'll proceed.
7. then just bluetooth it over and apply as ringtone!
this should work for you unless you want a ringtone larger than 2 mins then it wouldn't let you create it. and i use goldwave to trim the song clips from the mp3's first.

I found an even easier way! After much tooling around and reading forum suggestions, I found out that while you can't fool the phone into using mp3 files by changing the extension to .3gp, you can change the extension of an AAC file, also known as an mp4! Just cut the song you want to use, reencode it using an AAC encoder (I use the Nero Media Player, which itself is just a tweaked version of WinAmp), and change the .mp4 to .3gp, and you're done! The files show up under music and the option to set as ringtone is no longer greyed out. Who hoo!
I'm finding that a lot of different bitrates work, but so far the sweet spot between fidelity and file size has been about 64kbps.

Hi,
I have one of these phones as well...and having the same issues with ringtones.
I tried going through the steps above and was easily able to convert my mp3 clips to *.3pg format. HOWEVER, on the bitrate under sound, I only have the option of selecting 32 or 48. That's it. Only the video has the option of selecting 256.
When I try to BT it over, it says invalid FTP request to the music folder.
I tried also using another suggestion on this thread converting it first to an mp4 and then renaming the file extention to 3pg and when I go to BT it says connenction unable to be made.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hey guys, i'm new here!
I have the SAME problem as BrownDevil after trying all of the suggestions. I don't understand what I am doing wrong.
Can someone HELP please!?
Do i convert my .mp3 to .mp4 then to .3pg? i've tried many things, they all seem to fail when transferring.

Alrighty, I did get it to work. I got this from another unnamed forum that I found that helped me out.
First you're going to need Quicktime Pro.
You load the audio file. You want to export file, then select movie to 3gp. Hit setting options and select the audio tab. These setting worked for me.
Audio Format - AAC-LC (Music)
Data Rate - 64kbps
Channels - Stereo
Output Sample Rate - 44.1khz
Encoding quality - Best.
It will then create the 3gp file which you can bluetooth to your phone. One thing no one has mentioned that needs to be known is you CANNOT upload this to your music folder. It has to go into videos, then my downloads.
Then when you check your phone, it will be under music, and the ringtone section won't be greyed out.
If you have any questions, please respond to this post.
Good luck!!

Heya!
You're very welcome! Seems like a lot but a couple ringtones under your belt and it's cake. Sure enough it's worth it just to save the $1-$2 per ringtone you'd typically spend.
Oh yeah, for editing your mp3s before you convert, check out Audacity. It's free and works fine.
