Here is how to get customized "real music" ringtones uploaded to your Motorola V3m. You'll also be able to get pics off of your phone and do other cool stuff.
You will need:
(1) Motorola Software Update (MSU). I have version C01.03.00:
https://rsd.motorola.com/download/Motorola_Software_Update.exe
(2) P2k Seem Editor:
http://mark.cdmaforums.com/Files/P2KSeem4V710.zip
(3) Motorola Phone Tools (MPT):
I got my downloadable copy for $29.95 at http://motorola.handango.com
(4)A USB cable to connect your phone to a USB port on your computer. If you don't have one, you can run over to Best Buy and pick one up.
Before you begin, uninstall Motorola Phone Tools if you already have it installed. You will need to start from scratch.
Anyway, here are the steps to get your phone to work the way it should:
1) Download & install Motorola Software Update (MSU).
2) Download and install "p2k seem" seem editing software.
3) Run Motorola Software Update. Follow onscreen instructions.
4) Connect the USB cable to your phone, flip your phone open, and then connect the USB cable to your computer - not to a hub, but directly into an open USB port. Obviously, make sure your phone is turned on during all of this. And make sure you do these things in the proper order.
5) Motorola Software Update will install the phone. When you see the IMEI Number, you're good to go! You've made a connection between your PC and your phone.
6) MINIMIZE (do not close!) Motorola Software Update.
7) Run p2k seem. When you see that you're connected (indicated in the status box in lower left part of p2k seem's program window), you need to make 2 seem edits.
IMPORTANT: Before proceeding, realize that making seem edits to your phone will void the warranty (or so I hear). Of course, this is what Verizon wants. Because when you sucessfully seem-edit your phone and are able to upload your own ringtones without paying Verizon for them, you win, but they lose. So they don't want you to be able to do the following simple two things. ALSO, make sure you back up your current phone configuration before editing as described below.
a) Type 2742 in the box for "seem," type 1 in the box for "record," and type 0000 in the box for "bytes." Then click on "load from phone." A whole bunch of values will appear in the upper-left (white) part of the program window, and beneath those in the section called "Selected byte details" you'll see the bit settings with check boxes next to them. At this point, backup your current settings by clicking on "save to file" in the lower-right portion of the program window. You can recall these later if you mess up by running p2k seem and clicking on "load from file" instead of "load from phone." Once the backed-up settings load, click "save to phone" to restore them to your phone.
Okay, after backing up, with your mouse, click around on the values in the upper-left portion of the "p2k seem" program window. You're looking for "offset 6A Bit 0." When you click on the correct one, you'll see the text "Bluetooth or USB file transfer" (along with a bunch of other bit settings) appear in the bottom left portion of the program window. You just need to make sure the box for "Bluetooth or USB file transfer" is checked!!!!! Makes sense, right? If you want to transfer files, then USB support has to be enabled! Once you check the box, click "Save to phone."
Only one more edit to go!
b) Next type 2827 in the box for "seem," type 1 in the box for "record," and type 22 in the box for "bytes." Click "load from phone." Backup the current settings. After backing up, in the first row of values that appears, click over until you get to Offset 0006 (you can tell which offset you're on with your mouse by the comments that dynamically appear in the upper right "Seem Info" portion of the program window). Anyway, for offset 0006, check the boxes for 0-2-3-6 and make sure the rest are unchecked. click "save to phone."
All you've done is identify your phone as a V3c instead of a V3m because the verizon loser Capitalist pieces of crap blocked file transfer in V3m. Greedy corporate idiots. Incidentally, I hear they were/are being sued for this.
After seem editing, disconnect the USB cable from your phone, and then shut down p2k seem and Motoroal Software Update.
9) Get Motorola Phone Tools (MPT). I bought it for $29.95. It's a great program! But you need this to get music and pictures and videos back and forth between your phone and PC. I downloaded it online. Didn't have to wait for a shipment, but then again I already had the USB cable lying around.
10) Install MPT. Follow onscreen instructions. Notice now that when it detects your phone, it detects it as a V3c phone instead of a V3m phone!!!!! If you didn't do the steps above, you'd be screwed because after installation, the "multimedia studio" feature in MPT wouldn't be available due to Verizons bullcrap. Yet you need the multimedia studio feature to transfer files such as pictures you take with your phone, your own ringtones, etc. For ringtones. I go into multimedia studio and then go into "melody shop," or whatever it's called. In melody shop I load an mp3 and edit it down to 25 seconds by using the "crop" tool - click on "crop" and then slide the "song-in" and "song-out" bars to the portion of the song you want to use. The timer shows you how long the clip is. You can also add a fade in and/or a fade out if you want. You can preview your clip before you accept it by clicking on the "play" button. Once you're happy, click on the green checkmark to accept the crop. Then I usually choose to "save to PC." Then I go to the file transfer part of multimedia studio and upload my customized ringtone to my phone. It's sweet! They just automatically show up as ringtones!
Good luck!
Troubleshooting: If you installed your phone with MPT *before* doing the seem edits, you'll need to uninstall MPT and start from scratch.

Finally got it to work. I rebooted the PC and started from scratch and now the Motorola software recognizes the phone and I can use the multimedia studio. I have transfered pics, ringtones, mp3s. Now I am working on getting video in there but I think I will need a memory card to that. Thanks.

All I needed to do was to create a new profile and set it as the default profile.
Menu/Setup/Connect-a-different-phone/Next
When your "new" phone is detected, then:
Menu/Setup/General/Miscellaneous/Always-use-this-profile
