I called vzw support instructing them to disable Text Messaging, Get-It-Now, and V-Cast video on my phone (a VX8100).
After the operator confirmed that it whatever changes they made there were done, they instructed me that the requested [aforementioned] changes would not take effect until I "updated" the phone.
Could someone please explain this (realistically).
I can only speculate with no information as of presently; is this actually necessary? Is it possible to disable, say, Text messaging/email or whatnot altogether on the unit itself, if not via a system menu then by some hack? (e.g. deleting the necessary files ).
I would appreciate any information that you can supply.
It's just, basically, I would rather not have to update the phone's software, however I want to, at the very least, have any and all "messaging" capabilities disabled/removed from the phone, if possible - the procedure need not be convenient if required.

When we disable this information in the system it is sometimes not recognized by the phone itself. The updating of the software is painless, takes about a minute, and is airtime free. Just dial *22899, hit send, and listen to the elevator music for about a minute.

hrm, alright.
But then are you stating that this IS a service-controlled thing? or is it a purely device-side thing? I would highly suspect the former, obviously, but I could understand the argument based on your reply (thanks by the way).
Moreover, on a somewhat unrelated subject matter, the time it takes to update (flash), software versions. People have quoted times all over the place in these here forums... I am aware how many factors are involved such that the times could indeed vary, just that some people mentioned that it took up to two hours to update from say V01 to V04 for the VX8100. It took my phone anywhere from 30-45seconds after I initially purchased it and took it home (upgrading from V01 to V04). heh, oh well, I guess we'll never know, but just thought I'd note that curiosity.
So, if they confirmed that the service has been disabled (text messaging, for example), and the update has been done on the phone, as well, then there can be no reason why the phone would receive any text messages, correct?

thanks
One more thing though. If I have V-Cast, Get-It-Now, and TXT messaging disabled. Does that mean "Mobile Web" will be disabled as well?
Furthermore, while I'm at it, any idea what other extraneous crap I can disable as well ;D ?
Btw, do you know if each particular service auth's against a verizon server on an account (number) based system? Just seems logical.
