Yesterday, my phone started displaying a red "EV" where the 1x used to be. It's never done that before, but it's been on for over a day now, so I guess it's here to stay.

Can anyone explain to me exactly what that means? From digging around, I'm guessing it stands for EVDO mode? That doesn't mean much to me, though, and I don't understand why there was a sudden switch.

Thanks in advance!

EV means that you now have broadband/VCast service in your area. We just opened up certain areas of Florida and North Carolina and are getting many calls about that. Believe me, having the EV is a good thing.

why is it such a good thing? I intentionally disabeled it from my phones capabilities because I didn't want to be charged for accidentally using the service with one of my shortcut buttons (especially on the razr's touchy keypad). So, other than "it's a good thing" what EXACTLY does the service include and why should I believe you that having it is a good thing? Since, I assume, you are a representative, you could explain this? Thanks!

EV won't be used unless you specifically ask for it to be. And anything that you download via EVDO that costs anything would have a proviso that says "Are you sure you want to download this---it would cost you such and such". That's done to prevent accidental downloads.

through customer care, you can specifically call in should you wish to and ask for all downloads to be blocked---this does not cost you anything. But the EV will still be on there because all that's telling you is that your tower is EV capable.
