First the story, it's short. Was out riding my bike when my phone jumped out of the holster and hit the pavement. I stopped hard to get it figuring it would probably just be banged up but OK. What did I do? Slammed on the brakes and went into a skid. What did I skid on? The PHONE! Tore it to shreds. Too bad I didn't wipe out too, it would have been doubly funny!
What would you tell someone who has broken their phone? I think my options are:
- buy a new phone w/ contract (see next paragraph)
- buy a go-phone and use my current SIM
I know there are some good deals on Amazon but I don't think I can't partake as I am currently on a family plan with 4 phones. I don't think Amazon will let me add a new contract phone to a current family plan. (This is where you experienced users come in! ).
Cheers.

cingular allows a maximum of 5 lines for each family talk account. BUT, credit-wise, you have to qualify for those 5 lines. If you already have 4, I'm sure your credit is good enough for 5. And why would you want to add another line? if u qualify for an upgrade you can just get a new phone but keep the same line. if u add another one its $10 a month which is $250 over a 2 year period... I would just go with the prepaid phone idea you had.

thats why you buy insurance , and only get phones that are isureable, if you do the prepaid idea make sure you activate it as a prepaid then put your sim in and throw the other away

actually you can keep the prepaid sim card and never activate it. you can use it as a back up for whatever reason u may need it. your original sim card can be put in one of the go phones right away and there is no need to activate the sim card that comes with it...

Actually, you don't have to activate the prepaid card..
The phone will be shut off if the phone's IMEI isn't sold out through the stores register. As long as you bought it (and didn't steal it) you don't have to worry about it getting shut off.

russ... go back and read the OP
a sim is not assigned to a phone number until that phone number is activated...therefore it can be used as a spare sim... (not his issue but a point to remember) all go phone come out of the box un-activated... the MIN and ICCID are paired at that time not before..
if the phone was bought from a dealer or a store or online the IMEI will have been scanned at the time of sale ergo will not trigger a POSA warning...
