After reading many of posts on here of people not knowing how to transfer files to and from their phone to pc and vise versa, i thought i might lend a hand. I have the VX8500 Chocolate from Verizon with the latest software updates. If your phone is older than a couple months from the date of this post, you might want to go to your local Verizon store and have them do any updates on your phone as needed.
I also have a 1gb Sandisk micro sd card. I picked one up from Ebay for 30 bucks, which is a very good price for one of these. After some research, i found out that only the brand name "Sandisk" will work in the chocolate. So if you get a memory card, get a Sandisk.
1st, you will need a USB data cable. You can pick this up from Verizon for around 30 bucks, or you can buy one from Ebay (although i dont know how good these are made, i bought mine from Verizon and it works perfect).
2nd, you need to download the latest software from BitPim. (you can google "bitpim") Install the software, and set your phone to VX8300, not the VX8500.
After connecting to your phone, you will see a button on the left hand side of the screen that says "Filesystem". Click that, then look to the center of your screen. You will see a folder with a + on the left side of the folder, click the "+". Next it will display many folders. The folder you are looking for will say "mmc1". Click the "+" on the folder that says "mmc1", and then you will find 4 folders that will say my_flix, my_music, my_pix, and my_sounds.
Each of these folders is where the files are held on your memory card. Its easy to add, delete, and transfer files both ways. For example...
If you wanted to save a picture from your phone to your computer, all you would have to do is open the folder that says "my_pix", right click on an image and save to anywhere on your computer that you would like.
Also, if you wanted to find the ringtones that are saved to your phones memory, they are located in the "brew", "mr" folder. Your phone memory pictures are in the "brew", "mp" folder.
I hope this helps anyone that didnt know how to do this. I looked and seached on this forum, but i didnt see anywhere that showed this method.
-Have fun, and enjoy your new trick!
--By using this feature, you have agreed that I and this site are not responsible for any damages that might happen to your phone. I have used this feature with no issues at all, but i cannot guarantee your phone will have the same luck.--

Nice post, but if you don't mind, there are a few issues I'd like to address ( and possibly, disagree on):
1)"After some research, i found out that only the brand name "Sandisk" will work in the chocolate"
This is what Verizon would like you to think, as they had entered an agreement with Sandisk to sell only their SD cards through Verizon for a set period of time. I happen to have two microSD cards, a 512MB Kingston card and a 1GB Corsair card. Both work absolutely fine. In fact, I would recommend the other two over Sandisk based on price alone (Corsair even boasts a slightly faster read/write time than Sandisk).
2)"you will need a USB data cable"
.....Unless you have absolutely no intention of purchasing a memory card for your phone. If your phone supports expandable memory, then you're better off buying a memory card reader for your phone, which can be anywhere from 1/2 to 1/3rd of the asking price of Verizon's USB cable (I bought mine for about 9 bucks including shipping from Newegg). The reason I say this is because with a memory card reader, you have direct access to your card, which means you can basically drag and drop files to and from your computer/memory card without having to go through a third-party program, such as BitPim. Which leads me to my third discussion:
3) "you need to download the latest software from BitPim"
I've bought the LG 8300, LG 9800, and LG Chocolate from Verizon (yes, I'm a self-confessing phone whore), and I've never ever used Bitpim to do something that my phones are already capable of. That is to say, Bitpim already does almost pretty much anything your phone can, so why bother?
In my opinion, one of the very few things that Bitpim can do that your phone cannot (and even if your computer has a Bluetooth connection, then it can), is transfer contacts from your computer to your phone.
On top of that, the fact that Bitpim is third-party software and open-source, makes for an extra chance of something going wrong or even messing up your phone somehow.
Now, I know that there's only a very slight chance of that, but then, why take that chance? You even placed a disclaimer for yourself for using the software. I say play it safe and use your memory card reader. I'm not knocking Bitpim software in any way, I'm just saying that unless you use/go through multiple phones, and constantly need to update/transfer contacts between different kinds of phones, then play it safe with a memory card reader.
Now for anyone who decides to use Bitpim, I'm sure this is wonderful info if they need help. And I'm not trying to knock you for helping out, in fact, I'm sure that lots of others as well as myself would like to hear any more helpful tips you have for people out there. I just had a lot of quirks with this one thats all. Please don't take my post as an offense.
P.S. Just a reminder for all you Chocolate owners out there to make sure you go to your local Verizon store and get your software update to get Speakerphone support!

Well Bipim does alot more than just transfer contacts. It also transfers messages, calendar, and alot of others that no memory card can do on its own.
If your not sure about Bitpim and all of its features, you might need to check the program out before making a post about Bitpim. Not to come off sounding mad or anything, but you must know details before talking about them.
This is also a BIG must if you use your calendar often, which i do. Also, we ALL know how small the keypad is on this phone. You can add/delete contacts, email address, and other info on your computer using Bitpim, then transfer over to your phone. Very easy, and Bitpim has been 100% reliable to me so far.

You say only Sandisk cards will work with the chocolate. Where did you read this?

I actually used a USB SD external reader and just moved the music into the my music folder on the memory card and that works.
I tried to use WMP 10 and the sync function and I cant get it to work. When I plug the phone into the PC, it see's the phone, then I select sync music from the phone menu's, but WMP never see's the device, just see, "Press F5 for Refresh" Does anyone know if there are any issues.
I just had the speakerphone firmware loaded today, so I think I am at the latest software level.
I know I can do it the other way, but want it to work. FYI, I have kingston memory card, works great.

That's another interesting thing i've noticed, but forget to keep writing about. Yeah, for some reason, reading the SD card through a reader seems to be more reliable than Verizon's own USB cord.
I myself can get it to work, but it took a while. Maybe it's luck?

Can you transfer files through the reader onto the SD card and use them as ringtones? If so, how can this be done? Thanks!

Nope, for some reason, the ringtone system is different from the mp3 system, which I personally don't understand. However, its really easy to make your own mp3s and send them to your phone..... Check out this forum thread for more info

Great post, meandub.
I just got my VX-8500 yesterday and have been having a blast modding this thing. Made my first successful custom ringtone and wallpapers, so now I'm looking deeper into the filesystem.
I noticed that my phone's filesystem heirarchy is quite different than the one described. I'm not sure if this is due to the software version on our phones (I've not yet taken mine in to the dealer to update and enable the speakerphone). My filesystem has no folders under 'mmc1' and the 'brew' folder has no 'mp' or 'mr' folders. Can't quite figure out where my mp3 ringtone and jpeg wallpapers have been stored. Also, my 'my_music' folder is in the root directory.
Also, I've found the optimal image size to be 240x275 for wallpapers. Is this congruent with what everybody else is using for their image resolution?
