Hello,
I am pretty new to Prepaid Cell phones. I don't talk a lot on my cell phone, but would use it for emergencies, etc. I was going to get a SIM card and 1000 prepaid TMobile minutes off of Ebay to put on a phone, but wasn't sure which phones would work. Do all T-Mobile phones allow you to use SIM cards? Any info would be appreciated.
Thank,
Currie

Thanks for the quick response. However I have one minor thing to that I would like clarification on. When you say that they all take SIMS, are you just referring to T-mobile phones, or other brands as well.
Thanks,
Currie

Correct but if you purchased the sim card alone and need a phone, the phone number will be the one programmed on the sim card. If you go to TMO and purchase a prepaid phone, you will get a new number.

Tmobile and Cingular operate on the GSM network, which uses SIM cards. But be aware that both service providers make use of the illegal practice of locking their phones. This means you can only use a tmobile sim in a tmobile branded phone and a cingular sim in a cingular branded phone. Tmobile unlocks their phones for free after you've been a regular customer with them for at least six months. Cingular claims it is not possible to unlock phones (not true, all GSM phones can be unlocked with the proper codes and equipment). You could purchase an unlocked phone for a fairly decent price online or at cell phone stores that are not bound to any particular carrier. Unlocked phones will accept any and all sim cards, this means if you do a lot of travelling abroad, you can use the phone with country specifi sims as well. Great way to avoid those messy roaming charges associated with your regular carriers.

How is locking the phone illegal?

Locking the phones is not illeagal it is their way of insuring that you can only use their sim cards in their phones. I am a TMO customer if I go online and purchase an unlocked phone and in a year I want to switch to Cingular all I would need to do is order a sim card and have it activated. If I wanted to use the old device of a buddy who is a cingular cust. I would have to get the phone unlocked. As long as I stay with TMO no matter what I will never have to pay an activation fee to get a new device. With Sprint/Nextel and Verizon with the CDMA servers each new device must be activated. Now think of devices that come from the carrier stores or authorized dealers like this....When you go to Burger King do they hand out coupons for Wendy's or McDonalds???????? Locking is another way they have to keep customers by making it a little more expensive to switch but in no way illeagal.

Unlock codes are keyed to the specific phone's IMEI number, so nobody can "get you" that code except for your phone provider (or the phone's original provider), and any code you have won't work for anyone else's phone.
