I live in the mountains of North East Washington state. A neighbor higher up uses a Verizon broadband card in her laptop. I have been on it and was not impressed by the speed. She has line of site to a tower a few miles away. Another neighbor lower on the hill uses a sprint cell phone with USB cable in an unorthorized way, and cruises the internet much faster. I am struggling to know which way to go for internet as we have no land lines. Is there a way to use a USB cable with a Verizon phone? as that is the service we have at the moment. Or, maybe a better broadband card will be OK? Any thoughts on this is greatly recieved. I have 2 Samsung a930's.

Glenn, I believe the A930 can be used as a tethering device, where one hooks it up to a modem. Might want to call and speak with tech support to see if it makes sense in your area.

cingular has pc cards as well, if you want to check it out, here's a link to view coverage

http://www.cingular.com/support/maps.do

and there's a 30 buyers remorse period if you find the coverage/speed isn't sufficient, you can return it in the first 30 days and the contract is not binding.

just another option.

Cingular reception at my house is less than half the signal as Verizon. I just finished my Cingular contract last week and ported the number to another phone on my Family Share - Verizon. Surprisingly, 2 weeks ago I got a letter from Cingular telling me I had to move my service because over half my usage was not on the Cingular network which violated my contract terms. So, I moved. So, it is either Verizon or Sprint. Radioshack sells a data/USB kit for people with Sprint cell phones and they surf with it even though Sprint does not support it. I have been told that Verizon will not let me do that. I have to buy the $59.99 per month service for internet and that is the only way. I was also told that Verizin will not let a cell phone be used to dial up an ISP to get on the internet because too many people were doing it during the night and weekends.

Nothing official I know about the cell phone as a modem, but it certainly won't be any slower or quicker than an aircard. Try out the aircard and see how it does for you...it could be your neighbor's computer rather than the aircard.

So if ia Verizon Air Card is as good as Sprint... which carier is going to have better broadband coverage coast to coast? I would use it on the road too. I read somewhere that Sprint had a faster network. either way for me, the cost is the same. $59.95 a month.

Maybe I'm biased, since I work for Verizon. I think the speeds are pretty much in line with each other, but Sprint is far behind in Rev. A coverage. Nationwide, VZW has more coverage by far.

I have been a Verizon customer for years but also had AT&T and then Cingular on my business phone, and they all drop calls the same when driving.... so even though I could be biased... I just want to get the best.
