I have Cingular as my personal carrier & Verizon as my work provided carrier. Recently while on vacation it was imperative that I remained in contact with the plant, so I gave the GM my personal number (just in case). I am thankful that I did. At least 80% of the time I checked Cingular had strong signal strength - Verizon had little or no signal strength at all. I traveled from Indiana to Colorado, down to Texas and then back to Indiana. Even in the Rockies Cingular had signal strength, but for "emergency use only". Since the primary means of communication became my phone one nice thing that came out of this I am now a hero for using my "personal" minutes to solve company problems.
Another twist is that when I moved to Indiana from Texas, Cingular worked better there than Verizon. When I first moved up Cingular didn't have a presence & Verizon was well established!
The point to my rambling is where's the "NETWORK" I keep seeing advertised????

*228 does help but it can also be your phone model. Is it a Tri-mode or all digital? Some times in hard to recieve areas Tri-mode phone can work a little better (same with brands- lg or motorola).

No, I thought you would have to input "PRL" also or something.

Well just to put my 2 cents worth in, I was with verizon for 7 yrs, seen a cingular ad where they would roll over your unuses mins. every month. I thought WOW... this is great. So the next day I went out and signed with Cingular...After 6mos. and 4 phones later I gladly paid the termination fee of $300.00 ( FAMILY PLAN) and went back to Verizon.. I am now a happy camper again..
Cingular brags about less dropped calls then anyone.. thats true because you very seldom get a strong enough signal to make a call..And if you can't make a call you sure can't drop one.....

I switched to Verizon from Cingular and I have to say that doing the *228 update on your phone every month(as Verizon reccomends) is no joke. It really did improve my reception. My phone now gets a signal anywhere! Phone model also makes a difference. I have a Samsung sch-a930 but my friend has a Motorola RazrV3m. We both do our updates but her reception is so poor at times I wouldn't trade with her for the world.

Im not going to brag about either company, and explain my honest opinion, since i have used both of their services. First, Verizons service. I get very good signal and reception, even in the most remote of places, like in the middle of the desert in Colorado. They have reasonable rates, and Excellent CSRs. I use the V-Cast service, and its onstantly gets EV-DO signal, even when im a "Little" oustside their "enhanced" services area. all in all, they have great service and excellent Customer Support, the only drawback is the relatively limited selection of phones, and the fact that you cant use the phone overseas in europe, asia, etc.
Now Cingular: I had cingular for 2years, back in 02-04 when they first merged with AT&T. they had pretty good coverage, and got service almost everywhere, except in a few areas, but not many. one thing that cingular has over the competition is the variety of phones, they have TONS to choose from, and very nice looking phones BTW. there CSrs were descent but a few times were rude. I like the fact that Cingular phones use GSM, so that they can be used overseas.
Wrap-up:
Cingular has many phones to choose from, but in this day in age, Coverage remains supreme, and VZW beats Cingular IN MY AREA, so thats why I chose VZW and have been with them since '97-99, '99-01, '04-06' and now i just renewed my contract in January '07
