I need to have a tmobile motorola v300 unlocked. I was told that a tmobile customer can get the code from them for free. Is it illegal to have a friend of mine with tmobile call them and get the code for me?

No , just tell your friend to say that he or she just bought it cheap and want to unlkock to use it when he goes to europe in thanks giving holiday. They will ask for IEMI# then will email you the code with in 48 hours, but here the thing , they never will email you.
]So wait for 48 hours then call them back again and they will read it to you the unlock code , make sure to double check that you have wrote it down correct cause they won't give it out again.
Good Luck
