I don't know if you guys have tried this, but this is the way I get around all of Verizon's phone-crippling garbage. I do/have done this stuff quite frequently with my Motorola V3M, LG VX5200, and LG VX 8300. I downloaded bitpim on the internet. It's a free program used for file transfers with phones (just google it to download). I then bought a data cable on ebay for 5 bucks or so (if you have the music essentials kit, you can use the cable that comes with it). Then, I search on google for the drivers specific to what phone I am using. I install the drivers, then bitpim, and then connect the phone. Run bitpim. You can import all contacts in your phone book, your pictures, your ringtones/music, and everything else. To make a new ringtone, simply import a song or pre-made ringtone into the program while in the ringtone window. If desired, you can crop and edit the song as you wish. Then, click the button to send the information to the phone and there you have it, ringtones without using vcast. I have transfered mp3s, ogg, midi, and wav this way. good luck!

This is the way I get my music onto my memory card.

1. Format card in Phone, by going to Settings & Tools menu, option 8, Memory, Option 3, Card Memory, select options, with the right soft key, select 1, Format card, when that is done transfer the card to your card reader on your pc.

2. Open windows explorer, it should recognize your card reader as a drive. When you open that drive, it will show your card directory.

3. In windows explorer open the folder on your pc where your music files are located, right click on one of the music files and from that menu select "open with", select Windows Media Player, all your mp3 files will change to Windows Media files. No need to go through and convert them.

4. Then I just select the songs I want, if you hold down the control key while selecting songs, you can choose the ones you want. While they are highlighted, right click and drag to your card to the my_music folder, from that menu select "copy here", all your music will be copied to your card and the original music files will stay on your pc. I have copied 90 songs at once with no problem.

I have also used this same procedure to copy pictures and video.

I changed the settings on my phone to save to the memory card automatically. The steps to do this are: Go to settings & tools, option 8, Memory, option 1, save options, select from PIX, Flix or Sounds, Then select card memory, select OK.

I use MIDI files for my ringtones, I have found tons of free MIDI files online. I use Bitpim and data cable to transfer the MIDI files from my computer to my phone. You can copy them directly to the ringtones folder.

I was with you until asked for the unlock code - tried 0000 and others which were wrong. How can I fix this? Thanx

If your read the online help for bitpim it tells you how to use a folder on your expansion card (must have a card) to hold ringtones, but use that program at your own risk. For those not wanting to screw around remotly with a program that can't guarentee no damage to your phone, simply make some mp3 you want to be a ringtone, and email it to your phone (email address is (10 digit number) at vzwpix dot com or say your number was (678) 555-1234 the email would be 6785551234 at vzwpix dot com {cant enter links in any form, blah} for example) as an attacment to the email, you can leave the body and subject blank. You will recieve a picture message on your phone (25 cents without the plan I think) that has it. Hit the right soft key (the button that opens the contacts when you first open the phone) and choose to save file as a ringtone. I have tested both ways and they work.

@razorbak214 you can use the message way of doing it to get ringers or check the online help for bit, my phone is 2 days old and it worked fine with their guidence but you have to have an external memory card

@cat1205: the default lock code for the LG VX8300 is the last 4 digits of your phone number

The new phones are even more crippled that they used to be. Even more importantly, do not let Verizon update the software on your phone. My wife and I both have the LG 8300 phone and hers had gotten some water damage and said Car Kit on the screen. The tech at the store was able to repair it and while we were there asked if her could update the software.

Without thinking I said yes and he did my phone also. He said it was to fix 'glitches' which it might have done, but it also disabled MP3 capability on my phone.

When you go to the zero menu and enter the 000000 code and then select 11. Music Setting, the phone now says NOT AVAILABLE.

I will have to see if there is a way to get MP3 capability turned back on so I can listen to the songs that I have on the 1 gig card that is in my phone. They did not say what the software update would do. If you got an LG 8300 last year and liked to play your MP3's on it as was being discussed here, do not let Verizon update any software on your phone.

Yes, with the latest software download, or any new 8300 that is sold the 0 menu option and then option 11 is "not available." However I was still able to play the MP3's I had on my memory card. They just had to be imported into the Verizon Vcast player.

And you still should be able to make a ring tone (but it is not easy). I have not been able to get a good one yet. It has to be a small enough mp3 file to text message to yourself and then set as a ringtone.

I just got the 8300 about a month ago. MP3 playback is ENABLED on the phone already as default. You don't have to change any setting. If you want to playback MP3s from the memory card, put them in the "my_music" folder and it works with no problems. No importing through the V-Cast software or anything like that. I have software version 3 as well which is the newest one. This is all talked about in the stickied thread at the top of this forum.

I have also gotten Bitpim to talk to my phone, and push my own ringtones onto the phone with no problems through Bluetooth.

Sorry guys, my english is not that's great.

I did as below to make my MP3 works on my VX8300. FYI I have version 3 and I do not need to do anything to enable MP3. It's enabled on the phone already.

1. I bought 1 GB of micro SD card & card reader on ebay, I format the card in my phone. It did ask me the password, it will be last 4 digits of your phone number.

2. I just copied the songs (MP3 format) from my PC into the memory card.

3. Insert the memory card into your phone, go to "GET TUNES & TONES" --> my music --> the phone will adding songs to library.

4. wait and wait --> hit play all and it works great!

I have over 150 Thai songs on my phone now and it's playing at front as well. :+)

Enjoy.
