Here's the deal with MP3's and this phone (as well as ringtones). I just left the Verizon service center and they admitted quite openly that Verizon has now made it impossible to make your own ringtones or load your own music onto the phone so you have to buy from their VCast. They said the only way to get music was to buy from them. This comes from the "Technical Support" representatives at the Verizon store in Sherman Oaks, CA.
I also just got off the phone with DataPilot (or rather Susteen). Apparently, even though their web site still says that they can transfer MP3 ringtones and MP3 music to the phone... You can't and they know it, because Verizon has made it impossible. The tech said sometimes you can load the music but once you shut the phone off it will delink. They are going to change their web site, they say. Though the tech thought they already had. I'm posting this on several threads to get the word out.

so is there any type of music file you can transfer to your phone now without having to buy it from vcast? or is that really the only way you can get music onto your phone, because if that's the case there is no way I am going to buy this phone.

I don't really know. This is just what the Verizon techs in Sherman Oaks told me. I'm sure once the outrage is big enough either Verizon will change their policy or someone here will do a work-around.
I still like the phone and I have an IPod with my library on it. I don't think this phone would ever replace it.
I'm going to keep trying on my end because I already have the phone.
It just means you should always ask about this sort of thing with Verizon or any other mega dealer.
Good Luck

Now here's a kicker. I did manage to get an obscure MP3 from my computer to play from my music on the phone. How I don't know, but it worked. Either the Techs at Verizon Sherman Oaks were playing some kind of bad practical joke on me or there's a simple, because that's all I am, workaround to make it work. I'll try to make some more work and let you know.

I can't buy that totally, I'm having trouble downloading but get 2 CD's to download onto the phone so I know it can be done. It seems to be unbelievably harder than a normal MP-3 and to tell you the truth between all the free downloads I've done I can't tell you exactly which one I was using other than Windows Media player might have been dumbass luck. I had 2 CD's on and thought I was home free then the rest came back with unlicensed this after putting 80 or so songs on the disc. The songs took on the disc but when called up to play I get the license tag pops up. If I for a single moment get the end results that Verizon has marketed these phones only to funnel business into their own service and not do what they advertize it will do I will take another carrier and call consumer fraud division of the AG's. I just can't believe they would be that stupid but you never know.

I talked to an online verizon agent last night, I didn't ask specifically about mp3's because I knew what his answer would be. I did however ask if the only way to put music on your phone was to download it from vcast. He said that you are still able to put music from your computer on your phone using the music esentials kit. Which, is I guess, really all I need. I asked if there were any restrictions on the type of music files it was capable of playing, he said that it doesn't matter because when you use the music esential kit to transfer music it would convert the file as it transfers it....so...I don't know, does that method sound like it would work?

Let me tell you about the music essentials kit I recieved, first the USB cable was for the 8500 not the 8300 that didn't work, next the headphones are most likely for the 8500 as well they didn't work either. I did get the CD all for the special price of $20.00 some odd, so it wasn't a total wash, go to a store don't buy it off the Verizon web site that way you know what your getting is right. It appears the only way to do a download on this phone is from this kit cd however.

Pardon my ignorance, but I think we're all aghast over nothing, Oldbalboa's difficulties notwithstanding.
The Verizon techs have always told us one cannot put music on the phone except via VCast...sometimes with a wink in their eye. They're in the business of serving customers AND making money, which sometimes puts them in an awkward position.
I have no problem putting music on my 8300. I have a 1GB card with about 200 songs loaded and playing happily.
Groovy.

ah, a republican, how refreshing.
Okay, now I know the Verizon Techs were messing with me. I just converted an Aiff file (Bob Dylan "Don't Think Twice") in ITunes to an MP3 and dragged it out of my external hard drive onto the desktop and then dragged the file onto my micro SD chip and put it in the phone. Bingo, MP3 music on my phone. I even shut the phone off and on to see if it would delink or what and it was still there. It was probably because I'm a senior and it's fun to mess with seniors. The ringtone issue is still to be explored, but I think now they probably weren't exactly honest there too. I'm relatively sure that it doesn't support MP3 ringtones. I know MIDI and oddly enough qcp (qualcom format) works because that's the file format when you record from the phone. I had a friend do her dolphin impression for me and it's now her ringtone.
As we said in the 60's "don't trust anyone over 30", or should that be "under". Just kidding.

You can use the vcast music essentials kit to put music on your phone I have done that myself.
but i would like to put ringtones on my phone that i have downloaded from the internet. I have the data cable and the vcast music essentials software that i downloaded from Verizons website. But what other software do I need?
Can anyone tell me how I can put ringtones on my phone with out buying them from vcast or get it now?
Much thanks for the help in advance.
