I know that folks needing help think they need it ASAP, but people that give the most help here (not me) have jobs, lives, and families to take care of. This place is not their livelihood and I'm sure they appreciate some patience when folks ask for help. Having said that...
I have the 510. I can answer and disconnect calls on mine from the little button on the mouthpiece. Perhaps yours is broken, but make sure you're giving it a good firm push before you take it back.
As for the ringtones, you're not going to get anything but one ringtone from the phone. And the ringtone that is used cannot be changed. This is a design of the phone when in use with a Bluetooth headset (a shortcoming, if you ask me, but they didn't). I don't know what determines which ringtone is used with the headset, but when you connect with the headset, you're gonna get that one ringtone and that ringtone only. Maybe later, they'll make this change. I kinda miss my Tower of Power ringtones when using the headset, but the convenience of the headset negates not having my own ringtones.
And I must say, the 510 is one of the best headsets I've run across. Reasonably priced, sounds good on the other end, according to family and friends, comfortable, good and loud in my ear, and good battery life.
If you can get the 510 fixed or replaced, you'll be happy with it.

I'm surprised some of the better modders haven't figured out a firmware edit for the bluetooth ringtone. Has anyone attempted such a thing?

You can use files stored in .amr format (very poor quality)
Other than that there really is very little hope. The bluetooth profile does not have the facility, so if Motorola do not release a firmware with it enabled - which is very unlikely for older models - it would mean writing your own firmware. There are various security measures designed to prevent anyone accomplishing this.
