I can understand that Cingular probably lost money on my daughter's account this summer, but I thought we were playing by their rules. Is there something in the fine print about this? Our account says we have free Natiionwide Roaming. Does free nationwide roaming and free Mobile to Mobile mean something different? Is this just a come-on from Cingular?
Also - as a reminder - my father moved outside Cingular's calling area and was there for 3 years before we closed his account because of this. Fully 100% of his calls were from outside his calling area. So was his billing address. He never received a warning. I'm sure ths was because he had very low minutes usage, Cingular was still making money.
I'd rather not post my daughter's number or my e-mail address on a blog site. But I would appreciate knowing who else I can talk with about this. I was not aware that there was a team dedicated to excessive off network use. Is there a number I can call to talk with them?

to be honest the off network roaming rule has always been in the terms of service,.. just not enforced ... and yes all carriers have a line in there terms of service that most of your airtime must be on their network (I have checked.. ususally in a discrete line on the agreement)... for questions... call (866) 775-8936 ... input the phone number that is off network (its flagged) and you will be routed to the EON team...thats all they deal with...give them your situation... a computer assigned you to this team ...talk to them and they *may* re-evaluate your situation... if it is deemed that you are below the threshold... they may give you a couple of months...or if you are above the threshold they will assist you by finding a provider that best suits that area... as far as I can find you would be released from your contract (if anY)

oh absolutly they do, and for all the RIGHT reasons.. this dudes daughter was pretty much, vacationing, and this is the treatment he receives? sounds kinda like b.s. yeah we do have a department that does deal with those excessive use off network, but unfortunately they do not have a direct number.. you could PM me w/ your number if you want additional assistance

My daughter went to a Cingular outlet in Oklahoma and explained the situation. She also spent $100 to upgrad her phone. They said her account would not be closed. I guess we'll find out on the 25th, when her 10 days are up.

But they *DON'T*!!!!!!
Verizon and T-Mobile CAN'T even if they wanted to - they don't have a clause in their contract.
I've heard rumors of Sprint and Alltel rarely enforcing it, but not often.
Only Cingular militantly chases after excessive roaming. Whatever happened to the Allover network?

In April I bought my phones through wirefly (because of misleading promotions) and was living in Nevada at the time. A month later I moved to Alaska. I knew I was moving to Alaska at the time of my order and decided to go with Cingular because the coverage map clearly shows area's certain area's of Alaska I live in. (Though the fine print states the coverage map is not accurate). They cover their butts comming and going.
Much to my suprise I learn three months later that my phone will be disconnected in September due to excessive off network. I never heard of such a thing. I called them and they would not budge not even with me going back and forth to different states. They claim that anytime I use my phone in an off network area more than 50 percent of the time they will disconnect service.
That would make sense if not for the fact that I helped my brother hook up a cingular phone here in Alaska as well after being "impressed" with their so called coverage area. His phone after months and months has still not been disconnected and he lives a few miles from me.
To make things worse. My service was disconnected after 5 months. I informed Cingular that my contract with wirefly says I have to be with Cingular for 6 months or I am charged 250 dollars a line making it 500 dollars because they will not extend it 1 month. In Cingular's defense they stated they will pay it if in fact I am charged but we will see. I recieved an e-mail of the bill yesturday but Wirefly aka InPhonic appears to be a bit incompitent in our e-mails to understand the situation and are aggresively pursuing payment. I have no problem letting Cingular pay them it was their own dumb fault for not waiting on month. I will never do business with Cingular or Wirefly/InPhonic again. They have no common sense, common courtesy, or common decency. They have no trust in the consumer and deserve no loyalty. My time with Cingular I noticed even with their website and their phone setup that everything is just a marketing pool designed around trying to get the consumer to by things or press the internet button to charge them.
I had T-Mobile before this and I loved it. The only reason I switched was because T-Mobile has very limited area's where you actually get service.
I will keep you updated to let you know what happens.

Well, it's been 10 days and true to form, Cingular cut off my daughter's phone. This is in spite of the fact that she lives in Oklahoma and just 8 days ago upgraded her phone with Cingular and gave them an Oklahoma address.
I give up. We are switching to T-mobile or Verizon.

FYI Rick, don't know about TM but Verizon will not cancel your service for the reason that Cingular did. Good luck to you.

Yeah - you got to watch out for those authorized retailers - they won't budge on those charges - wirefly, Amazon, or any other "too good to be true" website. and now, don't try to blame us for excessive off network though, that is technically the FCC's fault since they won't let us build towers in certain locations.
And as for that map, it isn't misleading one bit - it not only shows our own coverage but it shows the coverage with our partnering networks, and well, unfortunately, when you're using their towers (and the best way to tell is if your phone does not say Cingular on it) it will be off network. Sorry bub.

Cingular doesn't lose money on anyone. There hold message that I listened to for over an hour on Saturday said they spend $30 million PER DAY to build more towers and infrastructure. Maybe they could throw a couple towers up in Alaska.
