Hi all,

I have an LG VX5300 and use the Verizon Wireless Service.

The phone is new and this is my problem.

The phone "freezes" up, which is to say that every fews hours or so, at random, I see that the clock is hours behind. When this occurs, I cannot receive calls (they go straight into voicemail), most buttons illicit no response and although I can power-off via the red button; I cannot power-up once I do so. I always have to take the battery out briefly and put it back in and reboot. Once rebooted, phone works until a few hours or a day later.

I called Verizon and their tech support could not decide if they should send me a replacement or if I should visit a local store and see a tech. They decided to have me visit a local store. The local store is unbelievably busy (this was in September mind you-I cant imagine what it is like now during the holiday shopping season). Although I was greeted at the door (nice touch), I was made to wait 45 minutes to see a "tech" who decided that I needed a replacement. This model was not in stock so they would overnight me a replacement. Since the phone was received by my company more than 30 days before (but not distributed to me until day 25 or so-I only had it for a week at the time I entered the store), there was some confusion on part of the "tech" as to whether the replacement would cost my company anything, after a minute or two of discussion, it was decided that they would replace it for free, based on our contract with them (not familiar with the contracts as they are handled by my home office). Because of this, I insisted on a receipt. No kidding, I had to wait another 30 minutes for the receipt to print.

Amazingly, the phone arrived within 24 hours and I was impressed. I immediately swapped the battery and battery cover into the new unit and sent the old one back via their RMA packaging (yes I deleted and reset all data-wish it were easier). I was happy.....

Until the same thing happened about a week later. I still have the original problem with freezing.

Frustrated on too busy to go through all of that again so I thought I would share this on these forums to see if anyone could help suggest what might be the problem. I am NOT technologically challenged (build computers and A/V nut) and I can say that I followed all of the directions like charge the battery before using etc etc. This is not my first cell phone.

My cell is rarely more than a few feet away from me because it is required for security purposes in the work that I do. I need to have confidence that my cell will work 24/7.

No signal issues in my area at all (Northeast Jersey) nor reception hindrance in any of the structures I am in.

For comparison, I had an LG 4500 on the same Verizon Service and it was flawless. I regret giving it up but the camera feature on the VX5300 allowed one less device attached to my belt.

Thanks for reading my lengthy post.

I just picked up one of these for my Girlfriend on the VZW network in NW Ohio and she has had no trouble with it so far.

Keep in mind these phones are like mini computers now days. And they will Freeze as you have said if you do not Reboot them from time to time. And phone I have had needed rebooting from time to time to fix minor troubles with them. Make it a practice to cycle your phones power once a day leave it off for about 2-3 minutes and power back up.

also keep your message box cleaned out. The fuller they get the less Memory your phone has. I am not sure if this stands turn but my VX8300 Seams to slow down once the Phone memory gets under 400k untill I added a 512 mini sd and moved all my music and pics off the physical phone Memory to the card.

thanks for the advice...

i guess ill suck it up and try exchange again...

if 3rd time is no luck im not sure i can ask for a different model as those decisions are handled by my home office and they "spec'd" this model...

as for memory and other issues...i generally keep -0- messages, i have a small contact list, i dont use any of the web apps or any wacky features....the only thing i use other than phone features is the camera phone and i generally send the pic to my server once i take the pic and delete it off the phone...

if what you say is true about having to reboot them once a day or more, ill be sure to never buy an LG product in the future...

other than connecting the charger every other day or so, i shouldnt have to do jack

thanks for the replies...keep em coming if anyone else has an idea.....

oh...

the other thing, as i mentioned in original post....i cant receive or make calls when it freezes up...

so rebooting it every so often is not acceptable because in between reboots it could be frozen...id have to reboot the thing every hour in order to be confident that i am available for emergencies which is the intended use

i suppose i could live with rebooting if it were my personal phone but this is for business....

Every phone rather LG brand or any other needs to be re-booted, as was stated recommend 1 x day.. If the freezing up becames a "known issue" with the manufac, they would submit a software update if it is possible. It is much better to power cycle any phone 1 x day, also doing a hard reset can't hurt.. I tt lady today that her phone wasn't ringing, could only talk/hear with the speaker phone on (for a couple of weeks) and when she did a hard reset, the phone rang and could hear.

Surely, you can live with your phone off for a few minutes, once a day?!? icon_smile.gif

yep, sure can...thats not the problem...the problem is the downtime between reboots....i have no idea if its frozen until i pick it up and reboot it....so even if i did it every hour (which is wack in my opinion) i cannot go a potential hour being "off the grid"-at least not on a regular basis....

ill try a hard reset

i had an LG4500 for over a year....that thing was a rock...was dropped 400 times and never even burped...nor did i have to reboot...ever

ive also owned cell phones for many years...even went years w/o a land line...i simply never had to worry about this...

as a techie...im dismayed if this is par for the course for newer phones from now on...

personally i think it is unacceptable but what can ya do right?[/b]

Man, Please read, Phones are like Mini Computers, Your phone is likly freezing up because it is never rebooted. Cycle power Once a day and in the 24 hours and 59 minutes that remain in that day you should not lock up. If cycling your phone is not fixing the freeze ups call LG.

I know many people with a VX5300 as they are now free with a new contract in my area. Only one of my friends has this same issue and her NEVER reboots for ANY reason. Like you he thinks his phone should gogogogo. The rest of us know we need to take that 60 seconds a day and reboot our phones.

How old is your phone. Does it need a software update? Don't waist time talking to the fools on the phone they are hired to answer phones and 80% of them could not troubleshoot a phone without there handy dandy flow chard.

i read the posts...

im just astonished that it is necessary

and i cant wrap my head around the fact that you dont see my point about how wrong it is to have to reboot once a day to avoid the freezing...like i said...it certainly isnt a waste of time or even inconvenient...the problem is if i pick a time every day to reboot it, like when i wake up...i can see that its been frozen for 5 hours because the clock is stuck at 230am when i get up at 730am...my phone must be able to ring a call through during those 5 hours...

and by the way...doesnt plugging in the charger every other day or so mean anything? lol

i know you said that rebooting might prevent the freezing in the first place but...thats what ive been doing all along (original post mention taking out battery and/or shutting down with red button)...it doesnt seem to help

whatever...thanks for trying to explain...it is appreciated...

Ticked,
I have been experiencing the same problems with my VX5300 as you have described. I am on my 4th brand new 5300 since August and they have all done the same thing. Some days the phone locks more than once and requires the battery to be pulled every time.

I also can't believe that it needs to be rebooted every day or that it will do much to fix the freezing problem. For example, the same night that I got the latest phone it froze about 12 hours after I picked it up at the VZ store. I've had direct experience with many LG's in the past few years (4400,4600,3200,3300) and have never had to reboot them daily or heard anyone else needing to either.

None of the several service techs I've spoken to have heard of this problem before. I can't believe that I've been unlucky enough to get 4 defective phones from 3 different sources (mail and 2 different stores) and no one else is having this problem.

I am also in North Jersey (Fair Lawn). Perhaps that has something to do with it? A service tech I spoke to today opened a ticket to check the cell towers around here.

The only reason I got the 5300 to replace my perfectly suitable 3300 was for bluetooth in a small LG phone. I would be interested in the new VX8600, but no one at Verizon is allowing me to switch to the 8600 even though I offered to pay the difference in price.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and please follow up with any new information. I will do the same.
