I was a Verizon customer for several years. The first few were great then when I resigned for a new contract it all went to hell. I had drop calls, or my call would go straight to my voice mail. I live within a mile of 2 Verizon towers. I would go to the store they would give me a new phone, when the same problems happened they would give me another phone. I went thru the majority of their phones. I asked if I was in a dead zone, they said no. I said could you check the tower for issues. They said its working fine ( without going to the actual tower). Finally the store manager had a tech go to the tower. Guess what, it was a Tower issue. Well the phone worked well for a while. Then same problems, I asked if it was another tower issue. The customer service on the phone was HORRIBLE!!!!!! I was told I wasnt guarnteed service in my home. I said this was happening outside. They then told me Im not guarnteed service in my yard or my drivewary because that is considered part of my home. I asked if the only place I was guarnteed service was in an open field? They said yes as long as their is nothing around. Some customer service. So I called area VP's, when I rcvd no help I just filed a complaint with the FCC. So needless to say Verizon let me out of my contract with no penalty. They have to be the worse customer service and cell phone company ever. I wouldnt use them if they gave me service for free.

I too have had a couple of bad experiences w/ VZW (in person at stores) that made me wonder if there was a manager on site who gave a damn. That said, used to work at a utility (not VZW) and understand that's not, cannot be, the mode overall for any successful company, and of course even CS reps are human. But maybe customers are saying something and VZW isn't listening? Maybe the business model strains customer relations to the breaking point when there are alternatives? Seems like after you strip away the technical/coverage complaints, where VZW generally has the winning product, the ones that are left are all about contracts and getting out of contracts and getting locked in to phones that simply aren't the latest in fashion or features.
OK, that two year contract is necessary because the phone's price is subsidized by the payment stream to come. But what I've never seen from VZW is an offer to strip that subxidy out and reduce the monthly payments if I pay full price for the phone up front (or get it on my own elsewhere). Why not offer either/or? Why not let me buy that phone from any source and not pay a penalty for doing so (that is, pay full-price for the phone and also full-price monthly)? That way VZW wouldn't need any contract unless I chose to give up those monthly savings in exchange for the subsidized price on the phone.
VZW has a business model that effectively locks out the competition from phone manufacturer direct sales. Why? And why incur the anger and frustration of so many customers who for whatever reason feel trapped in one of those darned contracts? Maybe many of them would choose the subsidized phone price anyway, but at least they'd know the contract was their choice![/u][/i]

I had drop call issues in my area. I live in a tin can park on the outter limits of the nearest tower. VZW gave me a newer phone. let me keep my old phone changed me plan to a Famely share and discounted me $20 for my trouble. Added to that the credited my account for all my games and apps. so that I could redownload them to the new phone and not have to pay again. This was 2 years agao and I ave since renewed my contract again.

Acbar,
There is such service with no initial contract, prepaid! Also you can pay full retail for your phone and not extend your contract, that is an option.
