I've been following this thread with some interest. From the last post, I gather that this really is Apple's fault. They're separating each MP3 into 2 files, if I understood the above correctly, even though you're transferring the files to an external device Apple should know is going to end up getting used elsewhere. So it's not some conspiracy by PC or Verizon people after all.
Is there some "preferences" or similar setting on the Mac to prevent this behavior? Just curious, since I don't own a Mac.

Yes and no re it being Apple's problem. Somehow Samsung managed to get by this - for the past year I've been using an SCH a960 with no double file problem.
LG also doesn't seem to know what their own equipment will or will not do - if you look at all the literature on the Chocolate, including LG's own website, it specificallly states that this is both an mp3 and WMA player. No desktop system requirements are specified. Even talking to their own tech support, they say "this phone can't play mp3's"! Yet, here I am, playing mp3's.
Some of the problem can be bypassed by simply creating playlists. However, if you just wanted to use the "shuffle" feature to play whatever is on your card, it wouldn't work because it would shuffle all the files, playable or not.
If anyone can tell me how to get BitPim to work and/or how to use Terminal, Please Do!

Since I posted this afternoon I have learned more about BitPim. I'm starting a new threat titled "LGVX8500, BitPim and Bluetooth for file transfer".

Babblebabe~ you seem to have been expermienting and learning a bit with the Chocolate.. i was wondering if you could try to help me out a little....
i just purchased the 8500 today, and after countless problems, first buying the music essentials kit -BAD-, then trying to use BitPim, which, ironically allowed me to transfer ringtones but not mp3's, i gave up and went out and bought a 2gb memory card and card reader to hook up to my powerbook.
after activating it, and putting on about 50 songs, i slipped it into the phone. after that, it goes downhill! my phone has frozen countless times - the music will play in the vcast section, yet when i try to access it in my "my music" folder without using vcast, it freezes, only solution, popping out the battery.
soooo.. i have reached the point where i realize that there are two versions of the song, a "0kb" and a file thats 4000kb. BUT both, regardless of size, are lacking the music note to the left side, rather, they have a "white box with a red circle and three horizontal lines beneath that circle."
when accidently playing either version, freeze again. have i done something wrong?
i dont want to play all my music in Vcast, cause i read somewhere that that charges you minutes
hoping for some help, thanks for taking the time to read all this!

If you're doing this on a Mac (me, too) then you'll be seeing two lists of your usic on your phone, the first of which begins with "._" and is unplayable; scroll down to the second copy and make playlists from that. If you have Bluetooth on your computer you can use BitPim via Bluetooth to create playlists the easiest way.
There are a number of other threads that go into the details about this. let me know if you can't figure it out.
We need a software upgrade from VZW and LG to solve this problem, but that doesn't seem to be forthcoming right now.

Another freeware application that enables Quicktime Pro (which I have) to save mp3 files to wma/wmv is called Flip4Mac
http://www.versiontracker.com/php/dlpage.php?id=28842&db=mac&pid=87679 &kind=&lnk=http%3A%2F%2Fdownload.microsoft.com%2Fdownload%2Fc%2F8%2F9% 2Fc8951314-e056-404a-8ea8-8744e42594aa%2FWM+Components+2.1.dmg
Quicktime Pro is 29 bucks and well worth it
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mac.html
As soon as I get my 1GB microsd (6more days) I'll try converting the mp3's to wma or wmv? and then drag drop em using the reader. Sound like a plan to avoid Apples resource forks?
What do I convert to WMA or WMV?
thanks

Let me know if any of this actually works. Personally, it's way too much work! I just want to listen to my music or whatever and not have to worry about it. Get with it, VZW and LG!

Using a card reader for the SD micro on a PC afer transfer from the Mac here is what I was able to accomplish.
Copy the MP3's from the apple to the card in the reader. (Got the duplicates as everyone here knows.)
Take the card and reader to my Windows laptop and create a directory on the PC. Copy the files from the card to the new directory on the harddrive. Format the card on the laptop.
Put it in the phone and re-set it to have the proper directories.
Back to the reader and put the files from the laptop back on the card.
It is a bit painful but a work-around for now.
Just be sure that you get all the songs you want the first time to as putting it back on the Mac after this could re-introduce the issue.

Are the duplicate files you're seeing "AppleDouble" files? These are files that have as their prefix the "dot-underscore" (._) pair? Apple uses this format to separate data (the mp3 file structure) and "resources" (in essence, metadata about the file). When I've had difficulty with these AppleDouble files I find that I can remove them using Apple's Terminal.app and the 'rm' command (e.g., 'rm -rf .-*').
I did get a data cable but can't get BitPim to recognize my phone, and I don't know how to use Terminal.
Any ideas? |
Thank you SO much for this post. I just got my LG 8550 yesterday. I use a MacBook Pro. I tried using BitPim and couldn't get it to work so I went and bought a card reader today. It is definitely the way to go to copy music to the memory card! I ran into the double files when I put the card back in the phone.
After reading this post, I popped the card back into my card reader and launched Terminal. I determined the path to my card by dragging and dropping one of the files from a window showing the music files on the card onto the Terminal window. I then using the rm -rf commands and followed it by the path to the card except I took out the actual songs file name and replaced it with ._*
So the command I typed into the Terminal was:
rm -rf /Volumes/NO\ NAME/my_music/._*
NO NAME is the name of MY card. my_music is the name of the folder on that card where the mp3 files are.
Anyway, thanks a million for this post. It worked like a charm!
