I have been having trouble with Cingular service in my home area since I first got service back on July 21. At first I was getting 5 bars for a few hours then 1 bar for a few and back to five. I was going to cancel, but I didn't want to go back to Verizon and they seemed to be making a real effort to fix the problem. The guy I was working with had some ideas and extended my option to get out of the contract by a month, then released me completely. The attempted fixes went on till the mid-October when they gave up, and confirmed that I was not in contract and could be released when ever I wished. I started travelling and didn't have time to mess with it until today.
Over the past four months the tech support people have been very helpful, but the customer service people have been nightmarish. One tells me something about my phone, or the status of my fix on Monday and on Tuesday another CS person tells me the exact opposite. It happened with not charging for phone replacements, with how I was being billed for a number I never had, and it happened the first time I tried to confirm that I was released from my contract.
I planned on heading over to Verizon today and being nervous, called to confirm that I was indeed out of contract. The CS said that I was still in contract, that there were no records of me ever having a problem and that we would have to start trouble shooting from today to determine if I actually had an issue. Nothing I said made a difference. That was her mantra and she was sticking with it.
I declined her help and moved on to another CS person. She found the info immediately and confirmed that I had been promised that I could be released from my contract, but had never actually been released. *sigh* So I asked to be released. She said Ok. I asked for a letter confirming our agreement. She said, "No way." Her supervisor said the same.
I do not want my records to "dissappear" right before I get that bill saying that I owe them for early termination.
How do I get a letter from Cingular?

We don't do letters.
The only way you can get 'your records' is via a court supeonia and you need a damn good reason to get one.
There is no way for us to have your notes just 'disappear'

yeah absolutly. we use a notation system in which we can't edit previous notes so if the 1st guy who promised to let you out of your contract indeeded did notate then it will be there to stay. and cingular pretty much always follow through on their promises.

For me, the customer, having the Customer Service Representive tell me that there is no record of 20+ conversations or our agreement is functionally indistinguishable from there actually being no records. Which is precisely what happened today.

It's more than likely that the rep overlooked that note - because I assure you, if it was noted, it's still there.
Anything that is in the notes, we must abide by - if the notes say to waive something, we have to waive it - if the notes say we cannot issue any more credits, then we cannot do that - that is how that works. It's to save our butts and out customers'
