Your own WLAN is free of course.
Could it be you connected to the Cingular WiFi Network?
Check the settings of your WLAN access point in your phone, they might give you a clue.

hello bjoern
thanks for the speedy reply, i just finished calling cingular 'data' department about the fees for the usage. it appears that the $45.87 data charge was applied the first time when i got my e61 and mistakingly connected through, what i was unaware of, (emode or whatever they have for cingular right now) to the yahoo page. and 2 other yahoo news pages. with the picture loading and everything, it comes to 1529 kilobytes x 3 cents for cost per kilobyte and there you have it (an arm and a leg) i hope all those new wifi phone owners (.or those who's not so tech savvy like myself) could have a chance and learn from my one time mistake, because thats how much it will run for just 1.5mb of data usage.
also another interesting thing is no matter how i asked the question about wifi usage, the data dept. rep keep telling me there WILL BE a charge to the account b/c i do not have a data plan setup with cingular (though unconvinced by it, but still would like someone to confirm on this again for pete's sake ).
anyways i paid for my mistake, and hopefully this will save someone's bank acct from being broken, because all it takes is just one browse. deadly. *argh*

Just set the phone to ask you each time with which access point it will connect. WLAN access points are shown with a blue dot, dial up (like GPRS) are shown with a yellow dot.
If connected via WLAN there will be a 4 square dots which are white, (at the main screen: at the top, under the battery indicator; in the browser: at the top, right side)
WLAN at hom is for free. Set up the connection to it and done.
If there is any other WLAN access point defined in your phone except from the one at your home: delete it. (unless you know for sure to where it connects)
And name the accesspoints in a way you know where it belongs to (I've got: one is names "WLAN@Home", the other two are named after the coffee shops I normally go to)
