Hi,
I am about to decide on buying the E61 (I am in europe).
Where I live, there are lots of WiFi-access points all over the city - will the E61 serve me well for surfing on the web thru WiFi ?
I would appreciate feedback, as I'd take this phone only if it supports this.
Otherwise I think it is simply awesome, from what I can gather.
If the real-world software-speed, and the battery life prove headache-free,
this is a great package.
thanks
alex

Yes, you can use WiFi to browse the internet and check your emails with the build-in email-client. And VoIP of course.
Also every installed application which needs internet connection can use the WiFi for internet connection (like "Jimm" for using ICQ).
The E61 can handle about 2 MBit downstream (at least that's what I got when I check with my 16 MBit line at home), upstream isn't that fast, but who cares?
Battery life is ok, but if you use WiFi alot you should charge at least every 1-2 days.
If you deactivate the energy saving mode for WiFi you get a better and much more stable connection, but it will kill the battery pretty fast (about 5-6h if used continuously).
The internal browser has problems with some complicated websites (but hey, it's a phone not a computer) so you might wanna use Opera.

Quick and probably stupid question..... Is WiFi like a wireless network you have set-up with your home internet and also the wireless internet like they have in Chicago and also is WiFi free to use?

WiFi another word WLAN, so yes, it's a wireless network.
WiFi is free to use when you use a free hotspot (another word for the access points in the city). Some hotspots need registration and payment.
If you can find a network and can connect to it without needing any settings like a password: use it, it's free of charge.
I myself use WiFi at home, I use it at a friends, at my brothers and two of my favorite coffee shops have a free WiFi access.
Note: you can't use WiFi on the phone to access files on a computer or exchange files with others. Its only purpose is the internet access.

Wow, this phone is a gem.
I just don't seem to be able to do the following
(which is very important to me):
How do I import the back-up (created in Nokia PC Suite) from my old NOKIA 6650 phone, into the new E61 I just bought ??
The thinking behind this is to be able to import into the new phone all SMS, contacts, calendar appointments and other media-files I had in my old phone.
Any hints ? (as I am still afraid to remove the SIM from the old phone, knowing I will lose all SMS messages)
Thanks !
Alex

Sorry, that is not possible. Unfortunately a backup of a phone can only be imported to the same phone.

to those who claims using E61 wifi through home WLAN is free, cingular made a nonbeliever out of me. i was charged for over $40 for data usage. im still a bit shocked, i called to customer service and was told that i need one of those dumb wireless data plans they have.
i honestly don't know anymore. everytime when connect on to the internet this past month i specifically made it to ask for available WLAN to connect and not mmode or what have you.
am i doing something wrong in the back end? is there a specific way to set up the wifi network connection on the e61?
if anyone else who has a similar situation and/or know how to solve this rediculous problem of mine please do let me know because like a couple folks here i do believe that if i connect through my OWN WLAN it should be free.
for now here is my plan 'z' (haven't tried it yet) take out the sim card -- but that would be really stupid, totally defeats the whole point of having a smartphone (sarcastic laugh). help. (echoes)
thanks for reading
