Will having 3G reception instead of regular reception (I already get in in San Diego and Nor Cal) improve my voice call quality/reception or is it just for data?
My 3G phone is having reception problems in LA. Cingular people say it's caused by 3G network which is supposedly coming this month to my area. Now, from what I read 3G is just the date service and doesn't affect voice calls. Or does it?

just data, if the 3g phone cant find a 3g network it grabs the GPRS or Edge network, your voice coverage should not be affected

3G DOES effect voice calls. There are more available channels on the 3G network than with GSM, which in the end SHOULD help voice performance. However in the time before full launch, there will be a few problems with the phone "knowing" which tower to use. They are working on this as we speak. 3G just soft-launched in CT and we are having these problems right now. In 3G fringe areas the phone has trouble with handoffs as well as prioritizing which tower to use based on signal. For the time being it seems like it will almost always prefer the 3G tower no matter what the signal strength is. In the end, 3G will lead to better voice quality overall.

Great! From the Cingular people I heard that 3G is coming to Orange County in two weeks.. I find it hard to believe. In Sacramento where I do get 3G coverage is very limited - one/two bars max! So don't keep your fingers crossed..

the maps are showing it in st. louis area but hasn't "launched" yet but when I go and look they have the umts tag on the towers.. I guess when they are all done with it they turn it on if they haven't already so at least we will have full service with it soon. (too bad I don't really need/ can't afford a 3g phone anyways so doesn't impact me too much, plus i'm in a service hole near my house only gets good reception outside of my house anyways. )
