Can't speak for T-Mobile specifically, but you shouldn't be charged for a mobile telephone number change. But I also wanted to let you know that you most likely won't be able to change the area code only ---you'll have to change the whole number.

if the customer is doing a market transfer then there should be no cost
MSISDN changes are charged when you do move and need a new number. The wireless provider didn't forced you to move. Pretty much the only time a MSISDN change is waived is when you were given a long distance number when you first activated service. i.e. 910 is a local area code, but you were given 910 area code but with a number sequence for a town that is long distance in that area code. hope that clears some up for you.

Interesting....TM didn't always charges for MTN changes. VZW doesn't right now if it's the result of a move.

if your work forces you to move from lets say New York City to LA the Mobile Number Change Fee is waived. This is called a Market Transfer and if your do a Number Transfer(Port) the fee is waive also. If you have getting harrasing phone calls you can change the free aswell. and for Business Customers if you are redepolying lines back with in your company then you can change mobile numbers with no change.
