I have a 3g GT Max pc card with unlimited data sim. i am thinking of getting a Nokia e62 for PDA use and to check e-mail when out and don't have the laptop with me. Can i buy a Nokia e62 without a contract and use the sim from the pc card when i want to use the Nokia and swap the sim back to the pc card when i want to use the laptop?

yes, but the E62 is retail price without a contract, you're better off finding it on ebay.

sounds good but considering i buy one off of ebay could you please clarify a few things for me.
1. which phone will Cingular support if i have problems a locked phone or an unlocked or neither? Is there a software differance between a locked and unlocked phone?
2. Would i need to program either one to use their media net and web access or is all this info on the sim card?
3. which do you feel works better (has better radio section) for working in fringe coverage areas. Nokia e62 or a Palm Treo?
Thank you for your input.

it will be much easier to troubleshoot a cingular-branded phone. whether it be locked/unlocked. the software differences between locked and unlocked phones will vary depending on which provider it was originally branded for. a locked phone will have the settings/software for cingular whereas unlocked phones may have provider-specific software.

if you have a cingular-branded e62, it should have the settings in there. if it was branded for another provider, you'll have to enter the settings manually. it will not be on the sim.

hard to say...it really depends on the area, but nokia has always been highly regarded for rf performance.

1.What information is stored on the sim when transferred to another phone?
2. Is the s/n or emi number of the phone tied to the sim? in other words could cingular tell if i am using the sim in a different device then what was logged when i bought the orginal device resulting in them turning off the service? Do they have a company policy or regulation about customers swapping sims between phones a customer owns?

no, cingular will not know, the imei is not tied to the sim. the sim basically holds your account info

Yeah, for our sales system, it doesn't recognize UMTS phones yet, so we have to "tell" cingular its a gsm phone such as a pantech 300 when really its a LG Cu300, cingular doesn't really care what phone you're using

Here is the issue with moveing a sim activated for a pc card device. The service activated on the pc card does not support voice calling yes a phone number is assigned to the pccard for billing. The pc card data plans will not work with nor will not combine with a laptop connect plan

Sorry, that didn’t make sense to me, it would be fine if he wanted to just use it for data, since he’d have the same APN. If he wanted to use voice, he could get a voice add-on.
