My Samsung a870 supports Bluetooth. I can connect to it from my laptop. Bluetooth is just a network protocol and can carry anything. My laptop supports sound, serial port Personal Information Management (PIM) [calendar, mail contacts etc.].
My phone requires an additional program like MightyPhone to sync to these PIM applications, but MightyPhone does not use Bluetooth.
If I could us Bluetooth I would not be paying connection charge minutes to keep my calendar, mail and contacts synced. Every time I got near my office they would be updated. When I went home on the weekend I could check to see what time that meeting was. I could edit my contacts and have the phone numbers in my cell always up to date.
Of course Verizon would not like this but I would. Am I alone?

Wow, I didn't know the A870 was BT capable, but maybe my brain is just overloaded, sure don't think it is though!

It is. I can connect to it via my laptop. I can't do much as the phone needs an application to use the protocol. As the next poster says the com port is supported.
I guess what I am saying is the bluetooth protocol is supported in the phone. The laptop supports it too and has an application that is ready to sync my PIM info. All I need is the app for the phone and I an synced!

Yes I can connect to it via my laptop. The laptop has applications that will allow me to sync my PIM (Mail, contacts, calendar etc.). All I need it an app on the phone to do the same. The connection is there. I have made it and verifyed it by using Ethereal.
To me this is a no brainer. Free updates (when I am in range) of my contacts (imagine typing in phone numbers in a GUI rather than the little phone keyboard. Knowing when I go home that my calendar is updated in the phone so over the weekend I can see what meetings or phone numbers I need to call into.
I am not all that interested in doing Email over the phone due to the interface, but whatever floats your boat.

I believe you are saying that if I were to buy MightyPhone and pay the $10/month to NOT use the Verizon network but rather use bluetooth. Further, if I were to connect to the laptop via the bluetooth com port that the program might work.
Is that what you are suggesting?

So, from my reading of the computer documentation the computer bluetooth serial or com port allows some bluetooth device (the phone is being suggested here) to talk to the serial port of the computer.
There are a couple of things wrong with thinking this will work to sync PIM applications (PIM is Personal Information Management or Mail, Calendar and Contacts).
First the computer PIM applications are not set up to use the com port to sync but with Bluetooth they are. Second the phone applications that do PIM sync (MightyPhone is but one) are set up to use the Verizon network (and charge you $2.95 per month).
I want to pay one time, use my own bluetooth network and have this capability as long as I own the phone. There is no technical reason why this will not work except that the application (MightyPhone in this case) is not set up to allow your choice of network. Even if the com port would work what would tell the phone PIM application to use that over the Verizon network? Nothing, is my guess.
Choice of update network would be required, or at least some kind of alternative like "When in range, use Bluetooth and when not update via Verizon once an hour (day, week?)".
I guess I am the only one that thinks this is a no-brainer.

No, my friend, I too think this is a no brainer.
It's odd how no one else seems to have interest in this.
I've learned that there are different bluetooth profiles that a piece of hardware may have an my phone (Samsung A640) only has two of probably twelve different profiles that exist. I suspect that my phone actually has the capability for all bluetooth profiles but the providers are able to lock down these other features. To transfer files and, assumable, sync data over BT, you probably need to have all the profiles available.
So how to unlock this in our phones; that is the question.

You probably need a different carrier. As far as I know (with my v710) Verizon disabled quite a bit so that our only option for Wallpapers and ringtones would be through their Get it Now. There might be firmware hacks out there that you have to upload with a USB cable first, but other than that I have no idea. Oh and warranties are of course voided when using hacked firmware :\
