can it be done? for example, porting number from sprintPCS to a cingular pre-paid SIM?
what is the best approach in getting this done? steps involved, etc?
the candidate phone will be an unlocked quad-band GSM phone i intend to also use pre-paid SIM cards with when i travel.

where you already have a device... go to a cingular store... have your account number from sprint...you will need to purchase a sim...cingular can guarantee your phone will work as they didnt sell it to you

It'll work provided its been unlocked, elmo's just sayin cingular will say it might not work.
From what I understand you can now have your house number ported to a cell phone.

the first cingular "store" i went to said they can't port numbers to a pre-paid SIM card, like the ToGo plan or whatever their brand name is for it.
although, i don't know that the storefront wasn't an independant retailer and not a compnay-owned entity.
if i can ascertain that it is indeed possible to port an existing number into a pre-paid SIM, then i will know when to put the pressure on when they say it cannot be done and my effort will be worth it in the end.
has anyone had this done? anyone speak from experience or from inside cingular that can confirm numbers can be ported or migrated into a pre-paid type plan?

you need a company store...
here is the store locator...
http://www.cingular.com/buy/store_locator
the ones listed as authourised retailer are not company stores...if it just says cingular wirless it is

Yep, my regional trainer had his old number ported to a go phone so that he can leave it on VM and have his new number given when they reach the vm
