I found 3.5 adapters that plug directly into the phone and have both a talk switch and a microphone on eBay. Just do a search for "VX8600 headphone adapter" after logging on.
I can't vouch for how well they work because I sprung for a set of Plantronics Pulsar 590 Bluetooth stereo headphones. I got the version that includes a charging stand, USB charging cable, plug-in cable, a Bluetooth transmitter for non-Bluetooth devices, and an airplane cable to allow the headset to be used in wired mode in places like airplanes where Bluetooth is illegal. The headphones retail for around $130, but I found 'em for $44 delivered.
After using those working around the house or at the gym, I'll never go back to wired headphones.

I really don't see the crotch-rocket/dirt-bike analogy. These are supposed to be multimedia phones. A better analogy would be a dual purpose road and dirt bike.
If you're going to design a feature into your product, make it easy to use! It would not be difficult to include a 3.5 mm plug into the phone. The reason they don't include it is to force you to buy all their accessories.

Where did you find that price break? I would jump at that.

I found an adapter. I have a LG VX8600 phone and wanted an adapter. I went to Best Buy and asked if they had something and they did! It is a Just Wireless Ultra Stereo Headset Adapter (SKU 08351) and you can find it online under that number. It costs less that $16.00. You just plug in your own headset and it gives stereo sound AND is also makes it a handsfree set---you can use it to talk on your phone. It is about 4" long and extends up to 24" with its own wind-up mechanism. The biggest problem is that there are NO instructions, so using the adapter as a handsfree device takes a little experimenting. I love it! I can listen to music without bothering other people while I'm waiting and I don't have to carry an extra MP3 player.
