I have the Media Max 200 on my phone that gives me unlimited internet on the phone. I realize that I can connect my phone to my laptop for internet connections. Has anyone done this and what kind of charges have you incurred by doing this?

if you have an unlim. internet plan, theoretically you can connect it as a modem for nothing, I've never heard of anyone incurring charges if they have the internet plan. But the internet is going to be rather slow if you're using edge or GPRS, 3g is quick though

Thanks for the info. I don't have 3g in my area. But I did connect at 119kb at home. Not blazing but if you have nothing else then it is great. And this is better than dialup at 56k.
I talked with cingular yesterday to 2 reps. One did not seem to know much about it and just kind of stumbled through and said that I would get charged at 1cent per k.
Another person that seemed to know what they were talking about and took the time to look at some information and my bill said that as long as I used their connection software it would be fine but if I did not use the software should could not say that how it would be billed, however with that being said, she did check my bill and saw that when I connected without using their software that it did go under my media max plan and there were no additional charges. But again she said that she could not guarantee that. She said that it was like this because their software controls the data flow and keeps it lower limiting it to the basic info that would be sent to the phone anyway but is just transferring it to your pc. Makes some sense to me.

your not supposed to do it unless you have the full internet plan. (the one that is like 39.99 or 59.99 I don't remember) it's an ongoing debate beccause unlimited on the phone vs unlimited with phone tethered to a laptop.

yeah, you're not supposed to tehter with a media max plan. cingular won't catch you, but they won't support you either.

Ok, im new to this forum, but here is my question. I also have the Media Max 200 on my phone. If I were to buy a wireless card (in particular the Sierra Wireless 860 card) I could essentially use it with my laptop for no additional charge (obviously not supported by Cingular tho)?

you could swap your sim card into it. buying the card without a contract and plan are pretty expensive. if you don't have a 3G sim, you're speeds will be slow.

3G is the way to go, when using your laptop and cell phone as a modem, and yes, you will have to get the unlimited data plan which is $59.99 a month, but it is as close as broadband speed as your gonna get. I am using the LG CU500 cell phone, and so far it is pretty good and quick. I am still waiting for the Cingular to come out with the "express cards" for my newer laptop, until then I will use my LG....

I understand what you are saying. But like I said, I talked to two reps, one did not seem to know what was going on the other researched the info on tethering with media max while I was on hold and told me that it would be fine if I used their connection software but that she could not guarantee it if I did not use it.
My first bill had it all under media max as well, no extra charges.
