Suppose you went missing (with your cell phone) for whatever reason/accident. If you were using a separately purchased SIM card in an unlocked phone, could Cingular theoretically locate you/your cell phone if requested by family or police (by way of a "ping", etc.)? Thanks to all who can respond. I am not cell phone and tech literate as you can see.

Thanks ... how can I find out if a phone is E911 capable? I haven't bought the phone in question yet and would want it to be E911 capable.

E911 is handle by the network, not the phone

Right, but the phone has to be capable of it before it can interact that way with the network

No it doesn't. E-911 is handled by another piece of equipment within the cell site. If your phone can talk to the cell site then it can do E-911.

Wrong. Malibu is right. I used to work for Verizon and had to tell people all the time we couldnt activate their old phone because it wasnt capable.
