Even though I was happy with my phone service. They weren't happy with me. Since most cell phone companies no longer charge roaming fees, they pay closer attention to where you call from.
In my case, the Cingular account was canceled because "more than 51% of your calls originated outside of a Cingular service area for more than two consecutive months". They canceled me and stated that I did not owe them the $175 x 2 ETF.
So I guess if you have a phone, ship it to someone who isn't in a Cingular area and can make a phone call to your house after 7PM and leave it connected until say 6am. I'm sure you'll get one of those nice little letters in the mail also.
The other caveat is that as long as you don't owe them any money they will unlock your phone. Can't speak for other carriers, although I have heard similar.
Cheers

That's interesting. Sprint just charges you for roaming if you finish the month using more roaming then nonroaming.

I suppose in that case it could get very expensive I would encourage checking the verbage of the contract. I know that Cingular was still doing this as late as a month ago. However, under AT&T you never know what impact that might ultimately have.

if you are living in a non coverage area (you are excessive off network) you should be released from your contract for that reason.

Cell Plan Depot com is a meeting place for people looking to get out of their cell phone contract "Plan Droppers" and those looking to takeover a contract "Plan Seekers". This service adds value to cell phone subscribers as it satisfies their need to break a contract and avoid the steep early termination fee. Those who takeover a plan will receive numerous incentives such as cash, free cell phones, accessories, and avoid activations fees through the simple transfer process. Those getting out of their plan avoid the early termination fees and all of the future monthly payments for that contract. It is a win-win process as both Plan Seekers and Plan Droppers save money through this innovative service.

Actually it depends on what plan you have. with mine, it would start eating away at my anytime minutes after fifty percent instead of charging me roaming.

That's different, is that also one of those 'grandfathered' clauses that you have so many of?
