No worries and if you ever figure out how to make the 'searching for network' to go away I'd love to know about it. This happens when there is no service but the phone is on and our thinking is that it may also be wasting battery.

Thanks for this! I just got the new Chocolate VX8550 (which I am loving - have had the 8500 for 8 months, the new navigation wheel plus more music memory is a big improvement).
I got EVDO disabled by following your instructions but substituting 8550 for the 8600! Hooray!
It definately made a difference in my battery live with the 8500, will see if the same is true with the 8550.
