Hello all. I hope someone can help me. I've done a lot of search on the web with no luck.

I have purchased a Samsung M500 and I am unable to make it use my own ringtones. I have downloaded some off the web and I can ransfer them onto the phone no problems. I know I have to trasnfer them from the card onto the phone but it's not giving me the option of putting them in the "My albums" folder in which the ringtones needs to be. icon_wacko.gif
Now someone also mentioned having to be in a certain format. does anyone know what format they need to be ? also how long can the clip be ? I called samsung and they were very Helpful NOT. the lady on the phone was so lost. anyhow I will appreciate any information you might give me .

Thanks a lot. .

I have the same problem. There are no directions in the book or on the website either.

I have talked to Sprint advanced tech support and their answer is that Sprint will not allow them to tell you how because the file may corrupt your phone.

BS!

If you want to pay the fee to download a file from their website, it goes directly into "my content" where you can easily access it. If not, they will do whatever they can to hose you.

I have never successfully reached a live person at Samsung, congrats on that!

I am within my 30 days and will likely opt out of my contract because of these issues.

My work phone is a Treo 650. I used Bluetooth to transfer two of my ringtones from that phone to my M500 (Qwest/Sprint). The files showed up in the ftp folder, but I can't get them to display in the ringtones database. I'm a computer systems architect and this should be a very easy task for me, but I can't figure out what is going on with it.

I even decided to pay $2.50 for a ringtone online just so I could figure out what directory they are downloaded into. No luck. When I clicked on the "Buy" button it said it had to reenter my personal information and then took me to the vision.sprintpcs.com home page. I can't use their home page for any kind of navigation. Every link takes me back to the same page with the same ONE ringtone. It's very frustrating.

After hours of experimentation, I figured it out. Check out my article on how to copy MIDI & MP3 ringtones directly to your Samsung M500 cell phone. Whew. It was a pain, but it works.

The only thing I know about THAT, is that if you go to DOWNLOADS and then RINGERS and press OPTIONS, you'll be able to use Option #2, "SET AS." to use your ring tone. I don't know if that helps.

I just got this phone and I'm finding it to be a pain-in-the-ass. Surprise #1: Instead of the 140 keystrokes I expected for text messages, you're only alllowed 115. #2: How do you take a photo of yourself and know what you're photographing? Wiith my old a600 there was a swivel head and you could see EXACTLY what you looked like and could choose the right moment to 'click.' #3: Too many problems to state about the WEB, but the major pain is that I cannot seem to use my HUSHMAIL address to send email messages: always a sign comes up saying "Secure Connection Failed."

I'm sure you're right about phoning Samsung: their Website SUCKS! And the instruction booklet isn't much better.

I don't know if I helped you: I hope so. Can YOU help ME? icon_mad.gif icon_confused.gif

P.S. My service provider is Bell, in Canada. Maybe things work differently with a CDMS phone.

I just got the M500 yesterday so I can sympathize. I found a program that allows me to make custom ringtones and download them on to my phone into the 'my content" folder through something called an air locker. Once you learn how to do it it's pretty simple. The program is Ringtone Media Studio. You can download the trial version at "downloads dot com"

Hope that helps you.

Downloading ringtones into your M500 is easy. Just go to the sprintusers dot com website, create a free account, which allows you to use "focus" to upload an m4a file and then connect and download it your ringers file.

To create an m4a file from an mp3 or wav feile, use Audacity, the free wave editor from sourceforge (do a search on this term). to edit out a 30 second sound clip. A great free encoder is BoncEnk, also a sourceforge , which will enable you to convert the clip to an m4a file.

Okay, everything I seem to read is from people in US using Sprint or something. I am in Canada, using Bell Mobility, and have changed my ringtone to my own custom ones using the mp3 to 3g2 method, but I want my own ringtones downloaded into the downloads section so that I can select them for other things like text message and voice message alerts. How do I get them downloaded to the DOWNLOADS ringtone section of my phone. Can I make them into the proper format, put them on my own web page and then use the phone to go there and download them? I would really like to figure out the way around paying for Bell's downloaded ringtones they charge 2.50 a piece for because they suck anyway, hehehe.

EDIT: Oh, I did try a program that lets you upload your own mp3 to a temporary web space. It then gives you the URL and an ID number to put in, but I get as far as the actual download of the file and keep getting download failed.

* EDIT * Okay, I tried Ringtone Media Studio. It supports my phone and even has an option for setting provider as Bell Mobility. Great. So now I just want to confirm that the file format for the actual ringtones for the m500 is *.m4a that I need to transfer via my locker.

well i dont know if anyone cares any more.
but if you want to make a custom ring tone its a lot simpler than whats on that hearttown site. all you have to do it cut your audio down to. say. less than 30 seconds (couldnt give you the exact file size needed to upload as a ringtone). anyway, edit it down to the part you want, keep it a wav or mp3 filetype, and then rename it with no spaces and just type the letters 3g2 at the end. connect your phone to your pc and drop the file into the dcim folder along with all your other pictures. then go to your file manager (under tools mass storage) on your phone and find the file. go to options select move and then select album. a notice should come up that says moved to phone. then go to your pictures find the ones that are "in phone" and you should see an icon in there with a file that has an X through it. highlight it and then press options and assign it to video ringer and there you go!

much much simpler than getting into all the midi and conversion stuff that was suggested. all you need is a decent audio editing software (or a friend who has some =P) and the ability to follow these directions. hope this helps, and post a reply if you run into any problems!
