Good news! I visited some other sites found a solution to the problem! I just had to clean the connections with some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. Voila! I guess I was just being paranoid about Big Brother Verizon.

so whenever i try and turn my phone (vx8300) it says "please use genuine battery" and shuts off. the phone is not water damaged. it has a little over 100 hrs of talk time on it. has anyone else had these problems? do you think it could just be a dead battery?
i had a water damaged phone before that gave me this message. i know this phone is not water damaged. thanks
If simply cleaning the battery contacts with alcohol doesn't work; the phone will have to be professionally disassembled and cleaned.

ok i have a vx8550r (or a chocolate 2) and i found a solution, when you get thins error, plug it it for 7 or 8 minutes, then turn it on (while still pluged in) ok unplug it (while on) then turn it off, turn it back on and it should work i dont know if it will work, but it did for mine, and well....anything to help the community right?

Try cooling your battery in freezer for 1 1/2 hours and then replace battery with charger connected. After charging is complete power on phone with charger connected. Once you get phone restarted disconnect charger. You might want to charge the phone overnight every night so as not to have the phone shut down. Cooling the battery has always worked for me.
