I am using my friends cell phone for about 6 months (I got it on his name and credit history). Its a 2 yr contract. Now I would like to transfer the phone to my name. i heard a few days back that cingular does offer the transfer of service. i would like to know the details: is there any fee to this thing, do the contract period remains the same? and whats the procedure to do this?

At least they will check your credit, so if there are "issues" there, be prepared.

Yes, TOS requires a new credit check for your name and there's a fee to transfer

A transfer of service includes an $18 transfer of service fee,a new 11 month contract, credit check possible deposit, and if you are on an expired rate plan you may have to choose a new one.

I just found out about this 11 month contract. That is the most ridiculous thing that I ever heard of. My brother has 4.5 months left on his contract but is moving away and will either have to stay on my plan or extend his contract 6.5 months. that is stupid because they will be getting more money out of him at $39.99 a month than the $9.99 from me.
I asked the guy on the phone."So if I add a line with a 2 year contract, and then immediately turn around and transfer the line, that person's contract goes from 24 months to 11?" To which the guy replied "that's the policy. STUPID.
