I'm fairly confident that the icon being discussed here is what looks a bit like a set of upside down binoculars. I believe that this picture is meant to represent 2 reels of audio tape as are used on "reel to reel" audio tape recorders. This picture is meant to represent the audio recording of a voice mail message. Of course, voice mail systems don't use audio tape, but you get the idea. This icon is the voice mail message waiting indicator.
