I've been lurking on the forums for a few days and the amount of information is overwhelming, but hugely informative.
basically, I found my original phone at the bottom of the washing machine a few months ago, so a friend gave me a Cingular Samsung SGH-X427, which has horrible reception at my workplace. Another friend just replaced his V300, so he gave it to me, unfortunately it is a T-mobile.
After pouring over these forums for several hours I am uncertain of which direction to go: Pay for an "Unlock" or download a "Monster Pack". The "Monster Pack" sounds like the best option, as it will (in theory) allow me to put all the Cingular stuff on the phone, such as the web browser and Cingular Store. My problem is that despite being decent at computers I am a total noob to phones.
My major concerns:
-I have MPT which recognizes the phone as a v600 instead of a v300, but this phone has never been modded. It seems to work fine though.
-I have no idea where to find a v300 Monster Pack, I have only seen them for v3xx. Any direction would be appreciated.
-If I have to get it unlocked before I can proceed can someone list a reasonably priced website that garauntees the unlock?
Thank you for the time, I need sleep now.

Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools isn't going to do for you what you want/need to do. You are going to have to use a P2K program like P2K Tools to get started and then your going to need either FB3 or RSD Lite to do the Flash/Flex. If your just used to using MPT your way under educated to understand what you want to do to your phone so your going to have to do a LOT of reading.
Read through the forum here and every other Moto Modding forum you can find and you will find EVERYTHING you need to know to accomplish this not too tough task.
Good Luck and Happy Modding!

I agree, I've been reading, and there are tons of things I need to learn. I have a Motorola P2k Media Files Uploader, but I don't think that will do the job. Going to search the archives more for a proper P2K. On the bright side, I love a challenge.
Mainly though, I can't seem to find a good Flex for the V300, only for Razr's and more modern phones. I won't flex it till I have a solid understanding of the software and feel more comfortable with it, I just like knowing the file is downloaded and not going to be wiped off the net before I am ready to do it (ran across too many dead links when searching the archives here as well as other sites).
Anyhow, I'm willing to self-educate and take pointers from the veterans. I really like the community of this site.

Your in luck because a lot of things are the same, but many are different. Seem editing is the same but different seems and edits for different phones. I would recommend for triplets series phones VxxxMods, and this guy http://yuetblog.blogspot.com/2006/09/road-to-extreme-modder.html has an awesome site for education and how triplets series phones work. I have a V330 and love it and have done some pretty extreme stuff to it as well as the modding I have done to my V3t. Don't be afraid, but be cautious and respectful of what your messing with and you should be fine. The very best thing you can do to get this phone up and running would be to use Motorola Software Update located here:
URL for Motorola Software Update:
http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/Motosupport/source/SoftwareUpdate Select.asp
follow the onscreen instructions (Start the phone in Bootloader mode (*# off) when starting from scratch) and if your phone connects and has enough power it should update the software and you shoud be running well from that point.
Happy Modding! RazrDyke V3t R3443U5_G_0E.C8.0DR
Custom: DRM, SU, SD, CL, Skins, Ringtones, 12 icon menu, Event/Alert Lights enabled, Gain Tables Modified, Enhanced Camera/Video Settings/Styles available

Thats a good point in the right direction. Off to study up. Going to read thoroughly before anything, but later on will update this with (hopefully) my success (or more questions).

Hi Lucid. i agree with Razr Dyke about modding your phone. BUT, you should read about your phone model and type. which is this case is a triplet phone. the yuet's blog is pretty good if you have a v360, which is a neptune LT2, and eventhough they have a lot in common about being modded. you can mess it up trying to apply something that is not for your phone.
There are some tutorials "HOW TO." in this forum. specially about triplets phones. here:
http://forums.mobiledia.com/forum51.html
You can also check out this other page, which helped long time ago with my v551 (which is also triplet):
http://www.vxxxstuff.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=104
Both talk about Vxxx Series.
And about your first question. you need to unlock you phone first in order to use it with your carrier. In this case, cingular right?. no matter if you flash your phone with a different unlocked firmware. this one, wont let you use your cingular sim card.
Search for 'how to unlock v300' in those forums . and you'll find a bunch of info about it.
things you might need:
usb cable, p2k programs, p2k drivers, RSD Lite, flash backup, etc
good luck and be careful about flashing, always make a backup of your phone's firmware. and make sure the flash file is compatible with your phone's Bootloader. See ya. Cheers

actually the V551 is not a triplet, uses a different flex and firmware.
P2k Easy Tools can unlock a V300 without test point
Google for it
Hint: Site is in Spanish.

That was the best advice and fun following the clues. At first I thought when you said it was in Spanish that was code for one of those sites that starts with a 'W' and ends with a 'z'. I checked those and couldn't bring myself to DL any software from such a place. The I started thinking literally, and I found exactly what you meant. For future reference to those looking, I won't spoil the clue, but the best version that isn't SmartDongle locked is v3.9
Now: Anyone got a lead on either a MonsterPack from Cingular so I can get the Browser and whatnot up, and also a good Triplets flex? I don't mind continuing the search, but I trust suggestions from this forum a bit more than just random websites.
Anyhow, I look forward to more than just unlocking, as I am somewhat skilled with Photoshop and would enjoy designing a theme.
