I purchased an L7 Motorola Phone on ebay to interface with a bluetooth phonekit in my car that uses a Mercedes-Benz V60 Adaptor with Bluetooth. Overall the phone works well, except the version of the software in the phone doesn't allow the adapter to dial DTMF codes.

DTMF works fine if I dial a number from the L7, however, if I use the phonebook from the phone kit (MB gives one the ability to dial from buttons on the steering wheel), the DTMF codes aren't sent. The folks at the company that supports the BT adapter (AWS) told me that the phone needs a newer software version, e.g., 08.C4.25R (I know that this numbering doesn't follow the standard, but that is what AWS people gave me). As I discuss below in my questions, I am finding that AER firmware can't be updated (maybe).

My questions:
1. I understand from reviewing posts on firmware, that when it is labled with an AER in the software version, the phone isn't supposed to be able to be reflashed. Is that accurate? Always?
2. If it is possible to reflash the phone, how can I do it? Where do I get the firmware?
3. If I can't reflash the phone with a newer version of the firmware, can I modify the existing firmware so that the phone will use the DTMF capabilities of my phone kit? How would I do that if it is possible?
4. The firmware on my phone is most likely a European or S.E. Asian variety because the recharger has a wall plug adapter. Will that make updating the phone more of a challenge?
5. Why would Motorola have firmware that is locked and prevents an owner from updating it? Are there cracks/modding approaches to deal with this?

Thanks,
rgleason

AWS probably thinks you have a Cingular SLVR which has an entirely different PDS and Firmware r4517 I believe, yours is R4513, in that case it may need to be seem edited, I can't find any info in the seem map but someone may be able to shed some light on this.

1. Not entirely true, if it's a cingular branded SLVR, it becomes harder, AER and EOR firmware are considered Sticky, IE they cannont be flashed by any non-AER and non-EOR firmware respectively, however, Some code groups can be split from an non-AER/non-EOR firmware and flashed individually, those include DRM, Language pack and Flex only. Also there is an unreliable method for removing sticky firmware and unlocking on Yuetblog

2. You use a program called RSD Lite, its warez so google for it, DO NOT flash anything but AER firmware or you'll be in for a headache

3. As I said it may be able to be seem edited, but I would think it has to do with the car or the bluetooth adapter not the phone,.

4. Yes and no, the US version is a little less popular, and firmware is easy to come by for the R4513 flavor. I had one and successfully extracted and flashed DRM, an English LP (0003) and Moto(RED) Flex, it is quite fun to mod actually

5. Moto was trying to prevent modding, but it was unsuccessful, and I don't see Moto pullin that again, in my experience, Moto is the easiest to mod, and I think Motorola had that in mind when they put together their phone's programing P2K is heavily supported in the Modding communities.

Like I said there's an unreliable method for removing sticky firmware, but there's really no need as the support for AER is high, most people don't want to to much more than DRM and LP, and Skins are universal to that screen size.

Basically the way to remove sticky firmware is to intentionally brick the phone to get the S Neptune Blank Flash interface, but its hard to accomplish the Blank interface

it goes like this
Flash a special "Brick" flash file
Plug in the phone w/o the battery
Insert battery
Use P2K Easy Tools to Repair PDS
Unlock (Only if neccessary)
Then Flash with a non-sticky MP such as Yuet Mod.

The hardest part is to get the brick flash to work.

Probably a lot of info to swallow, but if you're intrested in learning more, feel free to email me.

Thank you for the information. I appreciate the time you spent providing answers to my questions. I have a few more.

I believe that you are correct when you write that, "AWS probably thinks you have a Cingular SLVR." with ".Firmware r4517." My firmware is in fact R4513 and the phone uses Boot Loader 09.02.

The AWS people informed me that people using L7s with 08.C4.IER or 08.C4.25R firmware use the phone kit with no problem, but as you point out, this is r4517 firmware so I can't just flash it to my phone. I do wonder about two points that you make however:

1. I believe that you are correct that the primary problem is ".with the car or the Bluetooth adapter [and] not the phone.," but what AWS implies is that something in the phone's software doesn't make the appropriate connection. I'm not sure that I accept what the technical people are telling me on this, but, with the same Bluetooth adapter and other phone kit parts, if the system works with the L7 and r4517 08.C4.IER firmware, there must be some validity to what they tell me, won't you think?

2. If r4517 08.C4.IER firmware works, and it is possible to split out code groups (DRM, LP, & FLEX) can those code groups be obtained from an r4517 Monster pack and flashed to a R4513 phone? Or can I flash the code groups from another Monster Pack that is R4513? Which code group would likely have the code that deals with dialing of DTMF codes through Bluetooth?

I have read that these phones can only be flashed a limited number of times and then you can't flash it anymore. Is that true? What do you think about using the ".unreliable method for removing sticky firmware." I know that you wrote that support for the AER is high, but is it high to the point of my being able to access are more up to date AER Monster pack and re-flash my phone with that? Perhaps a newer version of the software would take care of the dialing problem I initially wrote about. Where might I get a more up to date Monster pack?

Thanks.

1. Well AWS may be right on that, the particular firmware may be older than the 4517 Firmware for more info on this ask around modmymoto.com as they have quite a few more experts on the L7 than here, now that I look at it that SLVR just may not have the ability to do DTMF from a BT device, as you may or may not know, different BT devices require a phone to have different profiles HF for handsfree, A2DP for stereo bluetooth and so on and so forth, this is controlled by the firmware, specifically the flash.

2)I'm not entirely positive if Flex from a 4517 will work with a 4513 and vice versa, I can't access modmymoto for some reason, but if you can search around for a post about AER firmware, it will tell you what you can and cant do as far a spliting MPs and flashing individual code groups, but I'm pretty sure you can do it that way, but I think that particular capability may be in the flash, not the flex as this seems like a BT profile issue

There is no limit on flashing that I'm aware of, I know a couple of guys that have flashed in excess of 200 times or more, with perfectly working phones

The method for removing AER firmware is really sketchy and doesn't always work, there's only a few people that have it working, but you can't try it because your bootloader version is too high, and as of now cannot be downgraded

I think the end solution may be dialing the numbers from the phone.

On an unrelated note Any relation to Captain Jack Gleason of SFPD?
